At Goldfish Swim School, swim instructors are reminding families that water safety starts long before summer officially begins.
Drowning remains one of the leading causes of death for young children, and many incidents happen quickly and silently. According to statistics shared during our interview, 88% of child drownings happen with a parent present, and nearly half occur within just 25 feet of an adult.
In Idaho, canals add another layer of risk with strong currents, steep edges, and cold water conditions that can make it difficult to get out once someone falls in.
Simple steps like staying within arm’s reach, avoiding distractions near water, wearing bright suites, as well as using life jackets around open water, teaching children how to swim can make a difference in any emergency.

- Treasure Valley letter carriers are turning blue to draw attention to hunger in the community ahead of the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.
Members of the National Association of Letter Carriers in the Treasure Valley are scheduled to have their hair — and some beards — dyed blue.
Organizers say the blue hair is meant to help spread the word about the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday, May 9.
During the drive, residents can leave nonperishable food by their mailboxes. Letter carriers will pick up the donations along their routes on Saturday, May 9, and the food will be donated to The Idaho Foodbank and other hunger-relief organizations.
