While federal law prohibits body armor possession only for certain convicted felons, Texas law is broader and applies to all convicted felons.

During a press conference outside the courthouse, Dr. Matthews and family members alleged the mother has been separated from her daughter for nearly three years despite evidence they claim supports reunification.
Speakers also alleged racial bias played a role in the case, accusing the court system of discriminating against the Black side of the child's family. During the press conference, they displayed photographs they said showed the child's living conditions while in the father's care and alleged the child later exhibited signs of neglect and deteriorating health.
The mother said she never harmed, abandoned, or neglected her child and is continuing to seek reunification with her daughter.
The custody case remains ongoing.
