The move by Texas-based ‘Greenland Energy’, comes months after U.S. President Donald Trump escalated his threats to annex the semi-autonomous Arctic island.
The government of Greenland says some equipment has already arrived on the Arctic island, without the necessary approval, and warns all future logistical matters must be done through the correct processes.

Across a swath of northern and central Spain, millions of people will have some of mainland Europe's best views of the celestial spectacle. It will begin around sunset, when the sun, moon and Earth align, briefly bringing parts of the Iberian Peninsula, plus slivers of Greenland and Iceland, into darkness.
Totality — when the moon completely covers the sun’s light — is expected to last less than two and a half minutes, reaching its maximum duration off Iceland’s west coast. By the time it gets to a small patch of Portugal and then Spain, totality will have dwindled to a minute or so.
The spectacle will then end over the Mediterranean.

- Environment Canada is about to launch a new extreme weather alert system for extreme thunderstorm and tornado warnings.
Beginning Tuesday, the institute will run a system that allows forecasters to draw a polygon over an area encompassing a severe weather alert.
The goal is to be more specific about these most at-risk areas and avoid so-called "blue sky warnings."
And as Matthew Bingley tells us, some say the move is long overdue.

- U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday titled the "Gold Standard Childhood Vaccine Recommendations." The order is designed to replace long-standing U.S. childhood immunization guidelines.
The recommendations seek to split the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine into three separate vaccinations injected at separate times to avoid what Trump claims would otherwise “possibly be quite lethal.”
The executive order also no longer recommends childhood vaccinations for hepatitis B, COVID-19, and influenza, and “directs the attorney general to advance legal challenges against states that violate children’s rights to religious or medical vaccination exemptions.”

It was the most powerful cyclone to hit China this year and weather forecasters cautioned ahead of the storm that up to 500mm of rain could fall. The government has warned of landslides and flooding.
More than one million people evacuated their homes in the east, but City University of Hong Kong scientist Johnny Chan says that’s a regular occurrence for storms like these.
As Global’s Nathaniel Dove reports, cities outside that path of the storm are now facing heat left in the wake of storm.

- Taiwan implemented a new exercise for its annual Han Kuang war games on Monday. The government throttled mobile internet connectivity across a large central region of the island nation for the first time ever – meant to simulate a communication disruption in the event of a large-scale invasion or natural disaster.
“I think it’s a good thing,” 50-year-old Taipei resident Chen Chun-Wei said, “Carrying out these kinds of (military) exercises regularly gives our armed forces more valuable experience and helps them to be better prepared.”
Taiwan President Lai Ching-Te oversaw coastal strike drills over the weekend, explaining the necessity of such drills “is to use live troops, live terrain, and live equipment to test command coordination, combat responsiveness, and homeland defence capabilities.”
The 10-day drills started on Aug. 5 and are designed to prepare for and deter any potential invasion as China repeatedly claims sovereignt...
