- The Bald Range wildfire in British Columbia continues to burn out-of-control near Summerland with residents on evacuation order. Authorities have announced the first death connected to the blaze during the mass evacuation effort over the weekend.
RCMP say an 80-year-old woman from Meadow Valley — located west of Summerland — was attempting to leave her home on Friday night with a family member when she suddenly died.
The coroner is working to determine the exact cause of her death, but police believe it’s a direct result from the wildfire.
As Victoria Femia reports, about 20,000 evacuees from Summerland and surrounding communities are entering day three of not being able to return home without a timeline in sight.

- The death toll continues to rise following the 7.4-magnitude earthquake that hit western Columbia Monday, causing the collapse of buildings across the region.
Residents and rescue workers continue to search through the rubble of collapsed buildings, in hopes of finding survivors.
The quake’s epicenter was in San José Del Palmar, a community of about 4,800 people, but it’s impact could be felt for hundreds of kilometres.
Colombia’s newly inaugurated President, Abelardo de la Espriella, said that he had personally taken charge of the government’s response to the emergency, telling residents, “you are not alone.”
Local officials confirmed that at least 18 people had been killed in the city of Pereira, two in the city of Manizales, and 27 in the Valle del Cauca department, where Colombia’s third-largest city, Cali, is located.

- Stores haven’t been able to keep one popular item in stock as people across the country flock together over the shared interest of porch geese.
“The geese have been flying out all season long. We’ve been selling hundreds and hundreds of them,” says Karen Van Duyvendyk, owner of Regina’s Dutch Growers Home and Garden.
The decades-long front-yard tradition that gained popularity in the 70’s is making a comeback, with people displaying decorative lawn geese on their porches.
Owners dress their geese up, often with second-hand children’s clothing, online purchases and even DIY outfits.
The trend has taken flight across the country, with a Facebook group with more than 14,000 members called ‘Porch Goose Club of Canada’, that allows goose-lovers across the country to share photos of their creations.
Sania Ali has more on the recent trend.

The Bald Eagle fire erupted Friday between Penticton and Kelowna and is one of the worst wildfires in the province, with crews calling it “explosive.”
Smoky skies have helped firefighting efforts, but the lack of rain and high temperatures in the forecast are expected to increase fire activity.
The fire is currently mapped at more than 13,000 hectares, and that range is expected to increase.

- Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he's rejecting U.S. President Donald Trump's peace plan for Gaza. Netanyahu told cabinet members on Sunday that he will not withdraw troops until Hamas is completely disarmed.
“When I say dismantling Hamas and its weapons, that means heavy weaponry, less heavy weaponry and smaller arms. All weaponry. We’re talking about a true dismantling not a fictitious dismantling,” Netanyahu said.
Trump's so-called “Board of Peace” announced last month that it has reached a 15-point agreement. Both Israel and Hamas accepted the plan, but differences emerged soon afterwards.
Responding to Netanyahu's recent remarks, Hamas said it remains committed to the deal.

The July report marks the third straight month where the unemployment rate fell, and the 6.4 per cent reading was also half a per cent lower than the same month a year earlier.
“What matters isn’t the single month of data; it’s the consecutive strength. Since April, jobs in Canada have increased by 181,000 and the unemployment rate fell by half a percentage point, declining for three consecutive months,” said Laura Ulrich, director of economic research at Indeed, in a statement.
Global's Jacqueline Hansen reports.

- Description
- When wildfire flames were closing in, 90-year-old John Belleville was still at home.
The Desert Cove resident, who lives with dementia, hadn’t evacuated as the fire rapidly approached. His daughter, Shiloh, who lives in Vancouver, soon realized her father had been left behind and began desperately calling anyone she thought might be able to help.
Eventually, one of those calls reached Bob Tutush, a man she had never met.
Tutush drove to John’s home, were he spent time earning the senior’s trust before convincing him to leave. With flames visible nearby, the pair made it out safely and headed to the Kal Tire evacuation reception centre, hoping to find John somewhere to stay.

- Ontario is experiencing what early estimates suggest is its worst wildfire season on record, with more than 680 fires reported so far this year.
A new world weather attribution report found human caused climate change made Ontario’s extreme fire conditions in July about twice as likely.
Scorching heat and intense lightning helped fuel fires across northwestern Ontario, forcing thousands of people from their homes in more than a dozen mostly First Nations communities.
Researchers warn that even relatively small changes in extreme fire weather can have major consequences for ecosystems, lives and livelihoods. Nicole Di Donato reports.

"In my 55 years, I have never experienced the Drava river being this low, some old ships coming out like this, the old bridge down. The river has always been low, but something like this... and since the next couple of days the temperatures will be low, I mean high, it means that the water level will be even lower. My God, where did the fish go?" a Croatian man said.
