- Description
- An Alberta teen’s family is heading to court in an effort to recoup nearly $200,000 they spent on out-of-country surgery after she waited more than two years in Canada’s health care system, claiming their daughter’s constitutional rights were violated.
In 2021, when Vienna Pedatella was 13 years old, she was diagnosed with idiopathic scoliosis, which curved her spine like the letter S.
They sought their daughter's spine surgery in the U.S., arguing lengthy wait times left them with no viable option at home.
Quinn Ohler has the story.

A search and rescue operation is underway as workers sift through the rubble in search of survivors and to recover bodies.
One survivor who had experienced earthquakes in the past said, "the trauma is overwhelming, when I was a kid I felt the 1992 quake and then the 2022 quake, and now this. So the fear is there, the trauma is there.”
A tsunami warning was issued following the earthquake but was later lifted after no significant sea-level changes were detected.

- Questions are circulating following the sudden removal this week of the RCMP's commanding officer for B.C., Dwayne McDonald. A statement issued by RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme said the removal follows recent allegations that date back to 2016-2018 and that investigations are underway.
"He is such a senior person that I think the RCMP owes the public an explanation. Not next week or next month or next year,” University of Manitoba Ethics professor Arthur Schafer said.
British Columbia Premier David Eby also commented on the removal on Friday, saying he thinks “that ultimately the public deserves to know why the head RCMP officer in British Columbia was removed, but I also know that it is crucial both for anyone who's bringing forward allegations, as well as for Mr. McDonald, that that's done properly."
As Catherine Urquhart reports, many say the public should have more information about why Dwayne McDonald has been removed for now.

“I don’t watch every single dollar when I’m in the middle of a campaign,” Ford said when asked about the report.
The premier emphasized that the $3,000 had come from the party’s own coffers.
“He will do anything to stop someone he doesn't like,” said Ontario Liberal MPP Stephanie Smyth said of Ford. She said she finds it “really hard to believe” after Ford said he knew nothing about it.
“If it wasn’t you premier, who was it? Who authorized this, who is responsible for the spending, who is directing the operation, did you see a report on this premier?” Smyth asked.

- Description
- Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced a new “playbook” Thursday to attract data centre investments to the province, claiming nimbyism “doesn’t make sense.”
Ford said he doesn’t want to “impose” data centres on cities that are not willing, but said that such facilities would help drive economic growth and ensure Canadian data “remains right here in Canada.”
The premier added the new framework would ensure companies cover their own electricity costs and establish a separate rate for large-scale data centres. He added that Ontario would not offer financial incentives to try to lure investment but would rely on its own “competitive advantage.”

- Description
- Hundreds of pages of court records connected to the Tumbler Ridge school shooting investigation have been released.
The records identify Jesse Van Rootselaar as the lone attacker and include a police report stating the shooter had mental health problems and a fascination with firearms.
Investigators reviewed CCTV video, police body camera footage, electronics and online activity as they worked to understand what happened inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School.
But despite the release of hundreds of pages, many witness statements, digital records and other investigative details remain heavily redacted.
RCMP say those redactions are necessary to protect public safety and prevent copycat violence. With no criminal trial, inquest or public inquiry in sight, many questions about what investigators learned and why so much of the evidence remains secret remain unanswered.
Rumina Daya reports.
