- The U.S.-Iran standoff is entering a tense new phase, with diplomacy facing major obstacles and the threat of further confrontation still looming.
As domestic pressure to end the conflict increases, U.S. President Donald Trump continues to promise an end to what has repeatedly been called a war of choice.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon is planning on reducing senior positions, creating a plausible risk to continuity and decision-making. Former Senior Pentagon Official Jason Dempsey says, “any time you say you’re going to scuttle experience and expertise, yeah, it can make you move faster – it can also help you move dumber.”
As Washington maintains pressure on Tehran, Reggie Cecchini reports that Iranian officials signal they are prepared to respond.

- Description
- U.S. President Donald Trump is using a decades-old trade law to keep tariffs on countries around the world — but now a federal court is asking whether he has the power to do so.
The U.S. Court of International Trade heard a challenge Wednesday to Trump's tariffs on goods from 60 trading partners, including Canada, which he accuses of failing to prevent imports made with forced labour.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer says, “The United States prohibits the import of goods with forced labor. Most countries in the world do not, and those who have a prohibition don't really enforce it. So, we're not going to tolerate that anymore.”
Canada is on the receiving end of the tariffs, but the businesses that launched the lawsuit do not purchase goods from Canada.
As Reggie Cecchini explains — billions in trade and the future of the tariff program are at stake.

Between 1857 and 1996, more than 150,000 Indigenous children in Canada were separated from their families and communities and sent to church-run, government-funded residential schools, where abuse, malnutrition and inadequate health care were rampant.
Carney emphasized the importance of remembering all aspects of Indigenous history in Canada, not just the positives.
He said: “We shouldn't admire the beadwork and forget the children that were forced into uniforms. We shouldn't honour the drum and ignore the years that it was made to fall silent. And we should not hear the truth of residential schools and fail to act on it.”

- Description
- A nationwide day of cross-sector protests in Paris on Tuesday saw firefighters and teachers -- among other civil workers and students – voicing discontent with the ongoing lack of government funding and resources.
The strike action comes just days before the government is set to unveil its 2027 budget draft, with budget cuts expected ahead of next year’s presidential election.
French President Emmanuel Macron and his center-right-leaning government are currently facing deep unpopularity across the nation.
In 2026, firefighters worked to combat massive wildfires during summer months and are denouncing the lack of support from the government.
Firefighter David Duquenne attended one of Tuesday’s demonstrations, saying, “Four firefighters have died this year… they didn't deserve to die. If they had had the necessary equipment, perhaps things would have turned out differently.”
Teachers and students also took to the s...

- A second teenager in Alberta has been arrested and charged with crimes connected to an online youth recruitment group that’s listed as a terrorist entity in Canada.
A 17-year-old from Lethbridge was arrested on Sept. 3 in the southern Alberta city and accused of committing crimes relating to terrorism, child sexual abuse and exploitation material (CSAEM), and animal cruelty.
RCMP allege the teen, whose gender was not disclosed, was involved in the 764 network: an online group that recruits children and youth via gaming platforms and social media networks and grooms them to commit heinous crimes.
The 764 network, which was listed as a terrorist entity in Canada in December 2025, is described as a transnational online ecosystem of violent predators with a shared ideology, not an organized crime group with central leadership.
Global’s Justin Sibbet reports.

- The leader of Manitoba’s Opposition not only quit the top job Monday, he quit the entire Progressive Conservative caucus, leaving it in disarray on the eve of a new sitting.
Obby Khan fought back tears as he stood in his legislature office and said internal fighting and feuding had taken an intolerable toll. Khan said he’ll sit as an Independent effective Tuesday, just as the provincial legislature is set to return.
“I want nothing more than to keep fighting for the people of this province and for a better Manitoba, but I will not fight my own party or caucus,” Khan said.
He said that despite winning a caucus confidence vote Friday by more than two-to-one, a minority of members lacking “moral integrity” have since been working to undermine his leadership. “I will not sacrifice my principles to keep this title,” Khan said.

Trump also said he believes a trade deal with Canada will be reached, because Canada wants an agreement with the United States.
“We’re going to win everything, we even have Lake Ontario,” Trump said. “I think a deal will be made, but it's going to be a fair deal.”
“Canada has been really very difficult to deal with, actually. And they've charged our farmers 100 per cent tariffs and more. They take advantage of us. They feel entitled," he added.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick commented on the deal saying it signified “Steel tariffs at work… Without those tariffs this mine doesn’t get built, and this steel plant does not get built.”
