- A new survey detailing drug consumption patterns by analyzing wastewater data in several Canadian cities is shining a spotlight on Saskatchewan’s drug crisis.
Prince Albert, the province’s third-largest city, had the highest levels of methamphetamine and cocaine in its wastewater between January 2024 and March 2026 compared to other Canadian jurisdictions, according to new data from Statistics Canada.
It also saw the biggest increase in norfentanyl in its wastewater between January and March.
As Ashley Beherns reports, the study is a valuable resource for police and community organizations trying to tackle the problem.

Protesters say classrooms are overcrowded due to teacher shortages, with some classrooms containing up to 36 students. School facilities are also said to be dilapidated, with some locations lacking meal service amid poorly planned class schedules.
While the French government acknowledges the difficulties students are facing in the public school system, it considers the protests irresponsible, after some school staff members were deliberately targeted, 65 of which have been injured according to France’s minister of education.

- First Nations and environmental groups in B.C. and Alberta raised concerns about the pace of talks on the proposed PacificLink pipeline.
While some First Nations supported its economic potential, others questioned whether there was enough time for meaningful consultation and environmental assessments.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre backed pipeline development but said he would “hold our applause until we see steel pipe in the ground.”
And as Global's Jordan Prentice reports, Prime Minister Mark Carney said all perspectives would be considered as the proposal advanced.

Mainland Air chief executive Philip Kean praised his former student Smit Machchhar after the Flydubai captain helped avert disaster during Wednesday’s cockpit attack.
“Quite proud of the guy really,” Kean said, while Hindu priests in India offered special prayers Thursday for the wounded pilot’s recovery.
According to Israeli officials, Machchhar opened the cockpit door after his co-pilot stabbed him in an alleged attempt to crash the Israel-bound plane, allowing passengers and crew to overpower the suspect.
Two pilots travelling as passengers landed the aircraft safely in Saudi Arabia, with all 174 people on board surviving.

- New York Governor Kathy Hochul and Attorney General Letitia James provided an update Friday on the ongoing investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a female Cornell University student in 2024.
The accuser, currently referred to as “Jane Doe,” alleged two Octobers ago that seven male students gang-raped her at the Chi Phi fraternity house while she was intoxicated.
“This young woman had already endured something that is utterly unspeakable and that, at every turn, she has failed by people and institutions with an obligation to protect her,” Hochul said, noting she was “deeply disturbed” by initial responses – or a supposed lack thereof – from Cornell police and, subsequently, the Tompkins County District Attorney after the alleged crime was reported in November 2024.
Hochul continued: “In what world would the police learn from a victim that she had been literally gang-raped while intoxicated by [seven] men in a fraternity...

- Description
- Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney was in Fort McMurray Thursday, to announce “the Government of Canada is officially listing the West Coast Pipeline, now known as Pacific Link as a project of national interest” — just three months after the Alberta government submitted the proposal. Carney says bringing an additional million barrels a day from the Alberta oil sands and the west coast, will let the world see Canada as a trusted energy supplier. “A pipeline to the West Coast is part of our mission to transform our economy, to double our non-U.S. exports over the next decade, to create tens, in fact hundreds of thousands of good jobs,” the prime minister added. As Heather Yourex-West explains, not everyone is happy with the plan.
Pacific Link is the first project to receive the national interest designation under the ‘Building Canada Act,' with Prime Minister Mark Carney making the announcement in Fort McMurray Thursday. Despite the announcement’s fanfare, the...

They also discuss the battle for Metro Vancouver, a proposed Alberta-to-B.C. pipeline, and why both parties may need to focus more on the issues voters care about most.

The United States is investigating the incident, as is Saudi Arabia — the country where Flight FZ1073, which was carrying at least 170 people — made an emergency landing on Wednesday.
Saudia Arabia’s initial investigation indicates the copilot “assaulted” Capt. Smit Machchhar, before the captain managed to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and crew members to take control.
As Global's Redmond Shannon reports, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the copilot had been “radicalized,” and reportedly posted on social media about killing Jews.

Neighbours say it's a fire hazard that no one seems to want to take responsibility for.
The regional district says there was a file on the encampment from 2014 to 2019, but nothing since.

Four astronauts, including Canadian Joshua Kutryk, are now in orbit. Their Dragon Capsule docked with the International Space Station (ISS) after a spectacular launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on Thursday.
“I'm in space, I don't really believe it, it feels weird though,” Kutryk said while in orbit.
Kutryk will spend the next six months at the ISS studying how spaceflight impacts the human body, while his wife prepares to welcome a new baby back home.

“[This is] really an exciting time for us, and particularly so because it represents the first time that a Canadian Space Agency astronaut has taken part in NASA's Commercial Crew Program… We're proud of Josh Kutryk and the hard work is that he's put into getting to this point,” CSA Director of Astronauts, Life Sciences and Space Medicine Mathieu Caron said during a post-launch press conference at the Kennedy Space Center.
On Canada’s studies during the latest ISS mission, Canon said the primary focus would be health in space and “investigating the effects of microgravity on the human body and how to lessen these effects” – research he said is “particularly critical” ahead of humanity’s planned return to the moon.
