- Description
- Parliament discusses the situation in Gaza with representatives of the Council and the European Commission. The debate will focus on the urgent need to release Israeli hostages, end the humanitarian crisis, and find ways to work towards a two-state solution.
Last week US and Qatari mediators announced that Hamas and Israel had agreed to a ceasefire, which was due to begin on 19 January. The deal includes the withdrawal of Israeli forces from all populated areas of Gaza, the release of hostages held by Hamas, and the release of hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. Palestinians that have fled parts of Gaza will also be able to return home.
It is estimated that Israel has killed more than 40,000 Palestinians since October 2023, in response to the attack by Hamas in which approximately 1,200 people were killed and around 250 people abducted. Hamas is still holding 94 people captive, although Israel believes that only 60 are still alive.

Terrorism remains a priority for the EU. Recent attacks - such as the one that killed five people and injured over 200 at a Christmas market in Magdeburg, Germany, last December - highlight the ongoing risks to our safety and democratic values.
Europol's annual Terrorism Situation & Trend Report gives insights on the terrorism threat landscape in the EU, based on data provided by member states on terrorist attacks, arrests and court decisions issued for terrorist offences. It offers law enforcement officials, policymakers and the general public facts and figures on terrorism in the EU, while also identifying developing trends in this area.
