- What role do political groups play in the European Parliament and how are they formed?
The European Parliament has 720 Members from 27 countries and from more than 200 political parties across the EU.
That’s a lot of different opinions! So how do MEPs reach agreements and make sure your voices are heard?
At the European elections, voters cast their ballot for national lists and parties in their country. The elected members in the European Parliament then build larger alliances with like-minded counterparts from across the EU - these are Parliament’s political groups.
To form a group, a minimum of 23 MEPs from at least 7 EU member states need to come together.
Groups are at the heart of Parliament’s political work - they help set its agenda and ensure all opinions are represented in the debate. They allow MEPs to work together on issues that affect all Europeans, like climat...

They will also discuss the need for the UN mission in the country to be protected, after several recent attacks by the Israeli Defence Forces against the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil), which left several peacekeepers wounded. The European Union has expressed its grave concern about the recent escalation along the Blue Line separating Israel and Lebanon.
Israeli authorities accuse Hezbollah of using UN peacekeepers as human shields and say that the UN’s refusal to evacuate Unifil soldiers has turned them into hostages of Hezbollah. Unifil was established in 1978 after the Israeli invasion of southern Lebanon to monitor the situation there.
