- In its first sitting of 2023, Parliament will discuss the priorities of the Swedish presidency of the Council of the EU. Members will examine the merits of establishing a tribunal to try Russia’s leaders for the crime of aggression against Ukraine.
Plenary is expected to call on the Commission for more stringent proposals for reducing and regulating the tens of millions of tonnes of waste shipped within the EU every year.
Parliament will also mark the 30th anniversary of one of the cornerstones of the EU – the European Single Market. All that and more, coming up in Parliament.

- The Parliament has been a supporter of the consumers’ rights to repair for over a decade. According to a Eurobarometer survey, 77% of EU consumers would rather repair their goods than buy new ones, but ultimately have to replace or discard them. This happens because of the cost of repairs, lack of service, product design that makes it impossible to disassemble and replace components. In some cases we can even talk of planned obsolescence - products designed to fail after a certain time or amount of use.

- Citizens who participated in the Conference on the Future of Europe will once again meet with European leaders to review and comment on what has been done since their proposals to improve the EU were delivered in May.
The event will start with a welcoming speech by the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola.
The Conference’s final report contains 49 proposals on nine themes, including more than 300 measures on how to achieve them. They are based on recommendations from the European citizens’ panels, the national citizens’ panels and events, ideas recorded on the Conference's website as well as discussions held during the Conference Plenary and working group sessions.

- MEPs will question Council and European Commission representatives on what is being done to keep energy bills down and help EU citizens deal with the social and economic consequences of the Russian war in Ukraine.
The introduction of a tax over windfall profits from energy companies and its use to help address the cost of living crisis will be on the table. The Commission has outlined its plans for such a temporary levy, defined as a solidarity tax, following calls from the Parliament in May and July.
On 5 October, Parliament also asked the EU for more emergency measures to ease the pressure of rapidly rising energy prices on European households and businesses.

- As a long-time ally of the Kremlin, Belarus has been assisting Putin in his war on Ukraine, becoming the launch pad for Russian missiles and tanks and hosting conscripts on its soil.
MEPs will assess this cooperation in a debate with Belarusian democratic leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, who is also expected to comment on the latest political situation in her home country.
Tsikhanouskaya lives in exile in Lithuania since the crackdown on opposition ordered by Belarusian dictator Aliaksandr Lukashenka following the fraudulent presidential elections in 2020. That same year, Parliament awarded her and other opposition leaders in Belarus with the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in recognition of their fight for democracy.
In 2021, during her previous address to Parliament, Tsikhanouskaya urged Europe to “face autocracy more proactively”.

Dozens of people are reported to have been killed in the demonstrations, which have sparked expressions of solidarity around the world.
Amini, a 22 year-old Kurdish woman, died on 16 September after her arrest by morality police in Tehran. They claimed she had broken headscarf rules.
The EU has called on Iran to respect fundamental rights. It is considering further restrictive measures against Iranian authorities.
