These new rules on packaging and packaging waste would ban the sale of very light weight plastic carrier bags, unless required for hygiene reasons and the use of intentionally added so-called forever chemicals (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances or PFASs) and Bisphenol A in food contact packaging. In addition, they would reinforce the option for consumers to be able to bring their own container for take-away food and drinks.
In 2018, packaging generated a turnover of €355 billion in the EU. It is an ever-increasing source of waste, the EU total having increased from 66 million tonnes in 2009 to 84 million tonnes in 2021.
