The new eco-design rules aim to improve different aspects of products so that they use fewer resources and are easier to reuse, upgrade, repair and recycle. Products should be durable and the lifetime of a product should not be limited through design features.
The rules want software updates, consumables (e.g. ink cartridges, light bulbs, coffee pads), spare parts and accessories to be available for an appropriate period.
A new “product passport” containing accurate and up-to-date information would be set up to increase transparency and help consumers to make informed choices

- Description
- The European Parliament is expected to call on EU governments for progress on classifying hate speech and hate crime as EU crimes as there hasn't been any development on this since 2022.
In the draft report to be voted on this week, Parliament members highlight the need to ensure that all people and groups that can become targets of hate are protected, and to ensure that freedom of expression is not exploited to protect hate speech and hate crimes. They are also set to call for an “open-ended” approach where incidents would be assessed based on their circumstances.
So-called EU crimes are crimes of a particularly serious nature with a cross-border dimension, as set out in the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU. Currently, EU countries laws deal with hate speech and hate crime in different ways, while EU-wide rules are limited in their scope to race, skin colour, religion, descent or national or ethnic origin.

- Parliament will discuss the humanitarian situation in Gaza, the need to reach a ceasefire, and the risks of escalation in the Middle East.
While international diplomatic efforts are underway to address the Gaza conflict and prevent it from escalating into a regional crisis, the Israeli government has expressed its determination to end Hamas' rule in Gaza. Israeli officials asserted a transition to more targeted warfare, though intense fighting continues.
MEPs are expected to reiterate their call for a ceasefire and the release of all hostages, as well as an end to the killing of journalists and aid workers in Gaza.
Gaza has been under heavy attack by Israel, in response to the attack of 7 October 2023, during which Hamas militants killed some 1,200 people, mainly civilians, in southern Israel and kidnapped around 250 others.

- Eco-friendly. 100% natural. What does it all mean?
Watch the debate to learn how the European Parliament wants to improve product labelling and ban the use of misleading environmental claims, a practice also known as "greenwashing".
This week, MEPs will vote on new rules that aim to make product labelling clearer and more trustworthy.
The use of general environmental claims - like “environmentally friendly”, “natural”, “biodegradable”, “climate neutral” or “eco” - would need to be backed by proof. Moreover, the rules would only allow the use of sustainability labels that are based on official certification schemes.
They would also prevent companies from claiming their products are more durable than they are, prompting customers to replace consumables earlier than needed and presenting goods as repairable when they are not.
