This is the theme of this year's World Day against Trafficking in Persons.
In the EU, two out of every three victims of human trafficking are women and girls. This number includes young girls, who make up the overwhelming majority of children who are trafficked.
The latest set of rules that Parliament has adopted criminalises the following at EU level:
• forced marriage
• illegal adoption
• exploitation of surrogacy.
What's more, people who knowingly exploit victims of trafficking by using the services that they provide can face criminal charges.

• respect for victims' right to asylum, by giving them the support and protection that they need
• support for victims using a gender-, disability- and child-sensitive approach

If the candidate does not receive the required majority, the European Council must propose an alternate candidate within a month.
