- The European Parliament is awarding the 2024 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado and President-elect Edmundo González Urrutia.
This award symbolises Parliament's recognition of the opposition as rightful winners of Venuzuela's presidential election in July 2024.
Each year Parliament awards the Sakharov Prize, including a monetary award of €50,000, to honour and support exceptional individuals and organisations defending human rights, democracy and fundamental freedoms. The laureates of 2023 were Jina Mahsa Amini and the Women, Life, Freedom Movement in Iran.
The prize, launched in 1988, is named after Andrei Sakharov, a Soviet nuclear physicist and a strong defender of democracy and human rights. He won the 1975 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to raise awareness to the dangers of the nuclear arms race.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused the Kremlin of stationing 11,000 North Korean troops at Ukraine’s borders. The debate comes as the EU and its member states prepare to apply the Pact on Migration and Asylum.
The recently announced plan by Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk to allow the right to request asylum to be temporarily suspended in certain cases is also expected to be raised, as well as the Italian programme to ship asylum applicants rescued at sea to centres in Albania while they await a decision on their requests will also be debated.

- In a debate with European Commission representatives, members of Parliament are set to call for an urgent ceasefire in Lebanon. They will also discuss the need for the UN mission in the country to be protected, after several recent attacks by the Israeli Defence Forces against the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil), which left several peacekeepers wounded. The European Union has expressed its grave concern about the recent escalation along the Blue Line separating Israel and Lebanon.
Israeli authorities accuse Hezbollah of using UN peacekeepers as human shields and say that the UN’s refusal to evacuate Unifil soldiers has turned them into hostages of Hezbollah. Unifil was established in 1978 after the Israeli invasion of southern Lebanon to monitor the situation there.

- Members of the European Parliament discuss the recent Court of Justice ruling on the Apple tax State aid case in Ireland with Margrethe Vestager, European Commission Executive Vice-President responsible for fair digital taxation.
On 10 September 2024 the Court of Justice confirmed the 2016 decision by the European Commission that tax breaks that Ireland granted to Apple constitute illegal state aid amounting to €13 billion. The Irish government now has to recover the amount.
MEPs will asses the implications of the ruling on the fight against aggressive tax planning and tax avoidance, as well as how to ensure that all companies pay their fair share of tax.
The meeting is organised by Parliament's tax matters subcommittee.

- The results of the European Parliament’s 2024 post-electoral Eurobarometer are out now. The survey looks at citizens' voting behaviour in the recent European elections.
It finds that Europeans are optimistic about the future of the EU and continue to hold a positive impression of the EU and the European Parliament.
EU membership is viewed favourably, with seven in ten Europeans believing that their country has benefited from it, a figure that has been stable in recent years.
Rising prices, the cost of living and the economic situation were the main topics motivating people to vote in June's European elections.
Among the other topics that drove people to vote were the international situation, defending democracy and the rule of law, with each being indicated by a third of respondents.
