- Why should the underwater site at the Painted Rocks be explored?
The Painted Rocks are a very unique cliff face located on the southwest corner of Flathead Lake near West Shore State Park. They have Native American pictographs painted all over the rocks, which were believed to be painted by the Salish Kootenai tribes. The team is working to create 3-D photogrammetry models of the underwater portion of the Painted Rocks. What lies underneath the Painted Rocks has never been studied before and creating a 3-D replica of the Painted Rocks above and below the water's surface would provide information for an archaeological catalog.
