- Founded just seven months ago by retired history teacher Steve Armstrong and fife player Pamela Roberts, Glacier Fife & Drum Corps traces its roots to a bucket-list trip to a Connecticut fife and drum "muster" - the largest gathering of its kind in the country. What started as one woman's dream to march in a single parade turned into a full corps, complete with uniforms gifted from the New York Living History Museum and the Presidential Fife and Drum Corps, valued at over $10,000.
With Montana's 250th anniversary celebrations in full swing, the corps is booked solid: a featured performance at the Montana 250 Commission's June 27th event in Helena, then a marathon 4th of July - the Kalispell parade, a park concert, the Conrad Mansion ice cream social, and a night game at the Range Riders ballpark.
They're also on a mission in local classrooms, teaching 3rd-5th graders about Lexington and Concord, Phillis Wheatley, and why the words of the Revolution still matte...

In this episode of Side Tracks, reporter Taylor Inman walks the Going-to-the-Sun Road with filmmakers Jordan and Logan Lefler, whose documentary 'Journey to the Sun' traces the legendary road from its earliest history as Indigenous homeland through the death-defying construction era of the early 20th century, all the way to the crews who risk their lives each spring to plow it open today.
The Leflers share how a chance presentation on road-clearing operations sparked a filmmaking obsession, how a near-cancellation pushed them to tell a bigger, better story, and what it really takes - bulldozers without reverse, 400 hand-installed wooden guardrails, aerial footage strapped to a 20-foot pole - to open this mountain highway every single season. A hiker was airlifted to Logan Health Medical Center in Kalispell after a surprise grizzly encounter on the Grinnell Glacier Trail - the second bear incident in Glacier National Park in less than a month, following a fatal attack on the Mount Brown Trail in early May. Taylor covers trail closures, safety reminders, and everything we know about both incidents.
Tuesday's primary election brought big wins and surprising upsets across Northwest Montana. Incumbent Rep. - Description
- Some performances don't just win games — they write history. This week's Poster Player of the Week is Bigfork senior Hayden Mayer, and it's not hard to see why.
In the Class A-B state championship game in Polson, Mayer did it all. He took the mound and never came off, throwing a complete game against a Dillon squad that entered the day with just one loss all season. When Bigfork needed a spark in the third inning, Mayer delivered the biggest hit of the game — a go-ahead three-run double that flipped the score and the momentum. He didn't stop there, adding another RBI later in the game to finish 2-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored.
This wasn't a one-game story either. Mayer was a cornerstone of a postseason run that took down three formidable opponents - defending champion Billings Central, Frenchtown, and the unbeaten Beavers - to bring Bigfork its first state baseball championship in program history.

That rally helped Glacier erase a deficit and reclaim control in a high-pressure playoff battle packed with momentum swings, big defensive plays, and late-game drama. The Wolfpack held off Hellgate in the final inning to secure their place in the Class AA State Baseball Tournament, where they now prepare to face Great Falls CMR in the opening round at Legends Stadium in Butte.
