- Hometown Heroes: Boca Raton seniors fight loneliness through acts of kindness

- Description
- At a senior living community in Boca Raton, this week’s ‘Hometown Heroes’ found a simple way to help their neighbors and make a few new friends along the way.
The idea started when some of the women living at Sinai Residences noticed some new arrivals would come in, get a warm welcome and then keep to themselves.
So, they started getting together and inviting others to join.
The women chat, make flower arrangements for residents in the health center, put together Purim bags, hand out challah for Shabbat, and help out wherever they can.
For Carol Lippman it was a natural extension of the way she’s always tried to live her life.

Enrollment is going up - about half a million kids go to private school, and that’s up 25 percent from five years ago.
Parents who make that choice can receive a huge break from the state. Through the Step Up for Students scholarship, they are eligible to receive 8 to 10 thousand dollars to go towards their kid’s private education.
But as that's been implemented - average tuition at private schools across the state is raising faster than inflation.

- Tiger Woods is set to appear in Martin County court Wednesday for a plea conference in the DUI case stemming from his March rollover crash on Jupiter Island.
Woods' attorney, Douglas Duncan, filed a notice Tuesday setting the hearing for 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2, before Judge Darren Steele at the Martin County Courthouse in Stuart. The filing lists the subject of the hearing as a “Change of Plea.”

- Two women face charges after investigators say four children lived in a semi-truck for six years, enduring alleged sexual abuse, beatings and severe neglect.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced the arrests of 37-year-old Tamra Marshon Stewart of Jacksonville and 51-year-old Keysha Monique Epps of Atlanta, who are accused of sexually battering, molesting and neglecting the children between January 2020 and April 2026.
According to investigators, Epps was a commercial truck driver who ran routes between Atlanta and Miami, with stops across Florida, including Orlando. The four children allegedly lived with Epps and Stewart inside the truck's sleeper cab for more than six years.
Investigators say the children were forced to share a single bunk and were denied adequate food, hygiene, schooling, and medical care.
Two of the children also suffered untreated burns that left significant scarring, according to the investigation. A...

- Description
- Young people aging out of the foster care system often face an uphill battle as they transition into adulthood. From finding stable housing to accessing education and financial resources, many struggle to locate the support they need at a critical stage in their lives.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services hopes a new initiative launching this fall will help change that.
The agency is launching FosteringTheFuture.gov, a national online resource designed to connect older foster youth and young adults who have left the system with services and opportunities in their communities.
"Older foster youth are some of the most vulnerable in the system," said Alex Adams, assistant secretary at HHS. "They have very low rates of going on to higher education and higher rates of experiencing homelessness relative to the general population. And we can do better for this population. We must do better."

The Florida Department of Transportation has given agencies 30 days to remove the systems from roads under its jurisdiction, revoked existing permits and said it will no longer approve future license-plate-reader requests on state roads.
But the order does not appear to apply to West Palm Beach Police’s closed-circuit television cameras, which monitor activity in locations around the city.

- Family members of several people arrested following a funeral procession in Boynton Beach are speaking out and questioning deputies' actions after videos of the incident spread across social media.
The concerns were raised Monday during a community meeting at Carolyn Sims Center Park hosted by Faith in Florida and the Boynton Beach Coalition of Clergy. The meeting was primarily focused on the city's proposed utility rate increases and a property tax proposal. A state lawmaker and Palm Beach County Commissioner Bobby Powell attended to discuss those issues with residents.
However, much of the conversation turned to the five arrests that occurred Saturday following a funeral service for a teen who was fatally shot earlier this month.

- Description
- Port St. Lucie homeowners are finding a flyer in their mailboxes explaining how the city's $24 million settlement with its former trash hauler will show up on their property tax bill.
The credits are the result of the city's lawsuit against Waste Pro, the company Port St. Lucie sued after two years of unreliable service and missed pickups. The two sides settled in April for $24 million, days before the case was set to go to trial.
In June, the City Council voted to return all of that money to residents through property tax credits rather than mailing checks. The settlement is being distributed over 95,000 eligible properties. According to the city's proposal, about 57,000 homeowners who have stayed at the same property since the 2022 tax roll would receive an estimated $364 credit. Roughly 38,000 other eligible properties, including newer properties added to the tax roll and those approved through an eligibility claims process, would receive an estimated $64 c...
