- Description
- Port St. Lucie homeowners are finding a flyer in their mailboxes explaining how the city's $24 million settlement with its former trash hauler will show up on their property tax bill.
The credits are the result of the city's lawsuit against Waste Pro, the company Port St. Lucie sued after two years of unreliable service and missed pickups. The two sides settled in April for $24 million, days before the case was set to go to trial.
In June, the City Council voted to return all of that money to residents through property tax credits rather than mailing checks. The settlement is being distributed over 95,000 eligible properties. According to the city's proposal, about 57,000 homeowners who have stayed at the same property since the 2022 tax roll would receive an estimated $364 credit. Roughly 38,000 other eligible properties, including newer properties added to the tax roll and those approved through an eligibility claims process, would receive an estimated $64 c...

"We believe right now, they were targeted the day they were killed in that crash," Hudak said during a news conference. "Which I find reprehensible."

- Description
- Social media can be a valuable tool for staying informed, but local law enforcement agencies say misinformation can create real-world consequences when information is shared before it's confirmed.
That's why the Port St. Lucie Police Department and the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office are reminding residents to rely on official sources during emergencies after a post about an active shooting circulated on social media Thursday morning.
Reports of a shooting near Walton Road and U.S. 1 quickly spread online. Authorities later clarified there was no active threat. Instead, the activity was connected to a law enforcement operation in a nearby neighborhood. Police said residents who believed they heard gunshots were actually hearing flash-bang devices used during a SWAT operation.

- Gov. Ron DeSantis and Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier are pushing back forcefully against a secret grand-jury report that found the DeSantis administration misappropriated $10 million in taxpayer money—arguing instead that the report’s disclosure was the crime.
The confidential report, filed with the Leon County Clerk’s Office in January and kept from the public for seven months, was leaked to CBS Miami.
During a Thursday news conference in Lake City, DeSantis disputed the grand jury’s central finding and accused a reporter asking about the money of lying.

- A $158 red-light camera notice a Palm Beach County man says he never received eventually led to his driver's license being suspended and a traffic stop where an officer told him he could be arrested.
Justin Burt says he had no idea any of it was happening.
It started with a red-light camera violation in Boynton Beach. A notice was mailed after Burt's vehicle was captured running a red light, but Burt says it never reached him.
“I don't know if it just got lost in the mail or, like, my mail forwarding with the post office wasn't working because I move around a lot,” Burt said. “Whatever the case might be, like, I never received a ticket for it, so I just didn't know.”
Because the violation went unpaid, Burt's driver's license was eventually suspended.

DeSantis addressed the issue Wednesday during an event at Florida International University in Miami, where he announced partnerships between the state’s emergency management agency and colleges and universities.
“I think these cameras, the license plate readers, I think it’s out of control,” DeSantis said.
DeSantis said the technology has evolved beyond uses such as toll collection and is now being used by police and sheriff’s offices for criminal surveillance.
“I’m all about having law enforcement have tools to be able to hold criminals accountable,” DeSantis said. “But I don’t want to have this become a surveillance state.”
He also tied his concerns to his push for an "Arti...
