An EF-3 tornado, with winds at least 135 mph, caused damage across portions of Nash County, North Carolina Wednesday. Storm investigators from the National Weather Service office in Raleigh are on the ground in Nash and Edgecombe counties surveying the damage.
A supercell tornado produced the tornado Wednesday. The National Weather Service is still working to confirm the distance the tornado was on the ground, but based on preliminary storm damage assessments, the tornado was on the ground for several miles. Officials are still working to determine the extent of storm damage, which in the immediate aftermath caused extensive damage to a Pfizer building and a still undetermined number of businesses and homes.
Additional storms and severe weather are forecast in both North Carolina and South Carolina, with most of the Carolinas in a 2% chance of seeing a tornado, based on the National Weather Service's ...

The ocean waters in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina have turned a beautiful, clear shade of blue. Like being in a tropical paradise, beachgoers are enjoying sights normally reserved for beaches like the Florida Keys. Tourists along the Grand Strand are enjoying the rare and beautiful sight. Meteorologist Scotty Powell explains why the water doesn't have its typical grungy, dirty coloring typically seen along the Carolina coast. The answer has to do with the water. A relatively calm weather pattern, which hasn't produced many storms or hurricanes, is keeping ocean waters calm. That has allowed phytoplankton and sea particles to calmly settle along the ocean floor. The absence of wind or other storm runoff, means nothing is mixing up - or churning - the ocean. Thus the waters are remaining calm and clear.

Percent containment represents sections of fire line that pose no escape risk without further action from firefighters. “The objective is to continue patrolling the fire and buttoning up any loose ends. The rain will help if we receive the forecast precipitation, but we are not going to turn our backs on this fire. Our job is not done until we feel confident there is no chance for escape,” says Deputy Incident Commander Shane Hardee.

- The air quality in the Carolinas is so poor Wednesday that officials have issued a Code Red, a type of air quality alert that encourages everyone to consider limiting prolonged exposure outside. Those especially sensitive to air pollution, including people with asthma, should avoid outdoor exercise altogether.
The Carolina Weather Group's James Brierton discusses the poor air quality, and the weather pattern making this possible, with WCNC Charlotte Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich.
Air quality is forecast to improve slightly Thursday and Friday but could still be deteriorated from smoke conditions.

NASA and SpaceX are targeting 11:47 a.m. EDT Monday, June 5, to launch the company’s 28th commercial resupply services mission to the International Space Station from Launch Complex 39A at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
SpaceX’s Dragon will deliver new science investigations, food, supplies, and equipment for the international crew, including the next pair of IROSAs (International Space Station Roll Out Solar Arrays). The solar panels, which roll out using stored kinetic energy, will expand the energy-production capabilities of the space station. This will be the fifth and sixth IROSAs launching in a SpaceX Dragon’s trunk. Each new IROSA will produce more than 20 kilowatts of electricity, and once all are installed, will enable a 30% increase in power production over the station’s current arrays.
Arrival at the station is scheduled for 5:50 a.m. Tuesday, June 6. The SpaceX Dragon spacecraft will dock autono...

Dr. Phil Klotzbach is back on the Carolina Weather Group to explain why he and the famed Colorado State University hurricane forecast predict a slightly below-average storm activity in the Atlantic Ocean this hurricane season.
They are forecasting 13 named storms, down from the average of 14.4 They expect 6 hurricanes, down from the average of 7.2. Dr. Klotzbach expects 2 major hurricanes of Category 3 or greater, which is down from 3.2.
Current neutral ENSO conditions look fairly likely to transition to El Niño this summer/fall. However, there is considerable uncertainty as to how strong an El Niño would be, if it does develop. Sea surface temperatures in the eastern and central Atlantic are much warmer than normal, so if a robust El Niño does not develop, the potential still exists for a busy Atlantic hurricane season. Larger-than-normal uncertainty exists with this outlook. We anticipate a near-average probability for...

After the previous launch target date changed due to weather conditions in New Zealand, NASA and Rocket Lab are now targeting 9 p.m. EDT Sunday, May 7, (1 p.m. Monday, May 8, New Zealand Standard Time), to launch two storm-tracking CubeSats into orbit.
The agency’s TROPICS (Time-Resolved Observations of Precipitation structure and storm Intensity with a Constellation of Smallsats) mission has a two-hour launch window from Launch Complex 1 Pad B in Māhia, New Zealand.
A second launch from Rocket Lab will carry two additional CubeSats, with exact launch times contingent on the date and time of the first launch. TROPICS is a constellation of four identical CubeSats designed to observe tropical cyclones from low Earth orbit, making observations more frequently than current weather tracking satellites. Gathering data more frequently can help scientists improve weather forecasting models.

During the spacewalks, Expedition 69 cosmonauts Sergey Prokopyev and Dmitri Petelin will venture outside the Poisk airlock Wednesday, May 3 and Friday, May 12, to help in transfer and install of an experiment airlock to Nauka and deploy a radiator to provide module cooling. The airlock and the radiator attached to Rassvet were launched on the space shuttle Atlantis STS-132 mission in May 2010. The radiator and the airlock will be robotically transferred by ESA’s (European Space Agency) robotic arm on Nauka with those movements operated by cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev inside the orbital complex.
