Years since its September 8, 2016 launch, NASA's OSIRIS-REx is returning to Earth with a sample from the Bennu asteroid. It is the first asteroid sample collected in space by NASA.
As OSIRIS-REx flies by Earth, it will release its sample return capsule into the atmosphere. The capsule will descend under parachute and land within a 250-square-mile area at the Department of Defense’s Utah Test and Training Range, about 80 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, near the U.S. Army’s Dugway Proving Ground.
After arriving at Bennu on Dec. 3, 2018, OSIRIS-REx mapped the asteroid in detail while the mission team searched for a safe sample collection site. One of the biggest challenges was that Bennu has an extremely rocky surface with hazardous boulders.
After a year, the mission team selected a sample site called “Nightingale” located in a northern crater 460 feet (140 meters) wide. The crater is thought to be rel...

Severe thunderstorms are forecast to bring damaging winds to North Carolina and South Carolina today, Monday, August 7, 2023.
The line of thunderstorms will feed off the day's 100+ degree heat index, which has prompted the National Weather Service to issue heat advisories across portions of the Carolinas. The storms are expected around 4 p.m. in the western North Carolina mountains, including in Asheville, Boone, and Blowing Rock. The storms will push eastward across the Carolinas and arrive in upstate South Carolina, including Spartanburg and Greenville, and Charlotte and Greensboro between 6 and 8 p.m. The storms are expected to remain strong as they move toward Raleigh and Columbia.
Coastal locations, including Wilmington, the outer Banks, Myrtle Beach and Charleston, could see the lingering effects from these strong storms during the overnight hours into early Tuesday morning.

- Description
- Finally, a free lightning tool! NASA's Short-term Prediction Research and Transition Center (aka SPoRT) has released a new, interactive tool to help you track - and maybe, just maybe, predict - lightning.
The map viewer, available at https://weather.ndc.nasa.gov/sport/lightning-viewer/, not only shows you where lightning is happening but how long since the last lightning strike. So no longer do you have to worry about keeping track of that last lightning strike before returning to the pool, beach, or soccer practice, this tool will let you know when that 30-minute window has elapsed.
On this week's episode of the Carolina Weather Group, we talk with Dr. Chris Shultz, who monitors lightning professionally and personally (you'll see).
This episode was available early to our Patreon supporters. Thank you for your continued support of the show!
And please do note: This video contains lots of light flashes from recorded lightning video. T...
