- Description
- A widespread weather folklore holds that tornadoes cannot occur in high-terrain mountainous areas, like the Appalachian Mountains. In this segment, the National Weather Service (NWS) presents data and photographic evidence from recent storm damage surveys to officially debunk this dangerous misconception. NWS meteorologists confirm that unique atmospheric conditions can and do create large, multi-vortex tornadoes in the mountains. We break down the radar data showing rotation and debris signatures, and share on-the-ground damage assessment photos. This isn't just about busting a myth; it's a critical safety warning to treat severe weather threats with the same urgency, whether you're in the flatlands or at high elevation.

The Quarry Road Fire, in the 5700 Block of Old Georgetown Rd of Shallotte, is at 283 acres and 50% containment. Some rain helped extinguish small flames but fire crews are still working to get a handle on the entire fire.
The Rose Hill Bay Fire, in the area of Pope Road, Corinth Church Road, and Earl Davis Road west of Rose Hill, is at 50% containment and 529 acres. The fire has been burning for five days.
Ongoing drought conditions and limited rain keep fire danger high across the Carolinas. While lightning and other natural causes can start fires, humans are the leading cause of fire. first evidence of damage was observed along Parker Road near
Jesse Mountain Road, where several large pine trees were uprooted
or snapped near the tops of their trunks. The most concentrated
damage occurred as the tornado tracked eastward across Dirty

attached porch was displaced several feet from a manufactured

determination that the damage was tornadic. A camper was

minor injuries. The tornado continued eastward into far

Dangerous Heat Wave: A persistent upper-level ridge is locking in a major heat wave for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. High temperatures will soar into the mid-to-upper 90s and touch 100 degrees in several locations. Oppressive heat index values are expected to reach between 105 and over 110 degrees, especially along the coastal plains of both states.
Weekend Relief: A cold front diving out of the Upper Midwest will push into the Carolinas this weekend. While Saturday will remain hot and sticky ahead of the boundary, expect scattered diurnal thunderstorms and a noticeable drop in temperatures for Sunday and Monday, with highs returning to the low-to-mid 80s for much of the region.

- Radio: The industry, its future, and impact on weather [Ep. 590]
- Runtime

- Date posted
- Description
- The future of Carolina's first commercial radio station, WBT 1110 AM, seems questionable - at best. Big broadcast companies are moving away from news radio formats, with their regular weathercast formats. Some big stations are shutting down or moving off the dial. Even Canada's national weather arm is shutting down their verison of NOAA weather radio, with the United States agency examining its next steps for the over-the-air weather service.
Where does radio go from here? We're talking with Johnny Caudle, a broadcaster, weathercaster and digital reporter based in North Carolina.
