- Church Senator Reverend Louis Wade Junior is pushing back against calls to decriminalize abortion in Belize. His response follows yesterday’s interview with Belize Family Life Association Executive Director Joan Burke, who advocated for dialogue with the government on changing the law. Wade rejects that position and says he will oppose any move to legalize abortion. He argues that unborn children deserve protection and that the proposed changes should not be supported.

- Wade also took to social media to condemn the campaign and call for the BFLA to be defunded. His posts linked his opposition to concerns about Belize’s population and declining fertility. He also made claims about ethnic population changes and the number of girls affected by abortion, although without supporting evidence. Speaking on the issue, Wade said he believes other citizens will join him in lobbying against any proposed changes to the abortion laws.
Love News understands that the conversation has already begun with government officials./

- UDP Belize Rural Central Standard Bearer Edward Broaster testified before the Integrity Commission in Belmopan yesterday in connection with his complaint concerning Oscar Mira. Broaster filed the complaint in June, asking the Commission to investigate allegations surrounding government contracts awarded to businesses linked to members of Mira’s family.
Broaster was accompanied by his attorney, Jacqueline Willoughby, who explained the process and the significance of his appearance before the Commission.
When he submitted the complaint on June 23, Broaster said he provided a three-page report along with supporting documents. He asked the Commission to examine whether any provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act had been breached. At the time, Broaster rejected suggestions that the complaint was intended to score political points, saying his concern was accountability and the use of public funds.

Hyde backed Pollard in the party’s mayoral race, but delegates chose Deputy Mayor Eluide Miller at the convention held at the end of August. The contest decided who would lead the PUP’s Belize City slate into the 2027 municipal elections. Hyde also pointed to the scale of campaigning on the ground during the Belize City convention as a reason to support campaign finance rules. He says the money involved in political contests needs greater scrutiny.

- Description
- John Briceño, Prime Minister of Belize: “Mr. President this is a new dawn for my country and a moment of renewal for this organization. This year the United Nations selects it’s 10th secretary general. Belize proudly supports the candidacy of Her Excellency Carolyn Rodriguez Bricket of Guyana. A distinguished daughter of the Caribbean. A Caribbean woman at the helm of the United Nations would be historic but history alone is not the argument. Her record is the next secretary general will inherit an institution under strain and a world impatient for results. Small and vulnerable states must be placed at the center of the organization’s work not at the margins of decisions that determine our survival.”

- Description
- Prime Minister John Briceño has announced Belize’s support for Guyana’s Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett to become the next Secretary-General of the United Nations. Speaking at the General Assembly, Briceño said her appointment would be historic for the Caribbean, but argued that her record is the stronger reason to back her. Rodrigues-Birkett is Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the UN and has served as president of the Security Council. Guyana formally nominated her earlier this year. If selected, she would be the first woman and the first person from the Caribbean to lead the United Nations.
Belize’s endorsement adds its voice to Rodrigues-Birkett’s campaign. The Security Council must recommend a candidate before the General Assembly makes the appointment, and any of the Council’s five permanent members can block a recommendation. The Secretary-General leads the UN’s operations, speaks for the organisation during international crises and can bring threats ...

- Description
- Prime Minister John Briceño used Belize’s address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York on Saturday to make four appeals: stronger action for Haiti, an end to the blockade on Cuba, justice for Palestinians and a place for Taiwan in the UN system. The speech came during the General Debate, where world leaders set out their countries’ positions on international issues under this year’s theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.” On Haiti, Briceño said the country’s crisis belongs to the wider Caribbean. He called for the gang suppression force to be fully deployed so that a Haitian-led political transition and planned elections have a chance to succeed.
