How does a Government communicate with voters? It used to involve putting MPs on the evening bulletins, giving interviews to the newspapers.
But we're in a different, evolving digital world, in which prime ministers and presidents can talk directly to the public, and frame their messages without the need to answer tough questions.
During the election campaign the prime minister was accused of dodging media appearances and his government has now been accused of boycotting major media programmes.
Has the age of the media as gatekeepers to the public finished – or are ministers simply keen to avoid scrutiny? And has the government bitten off more than it can chew?

The UK government has set out its desire to be world leaders in the fight against climate change, by getting to net zero emissions by 2050.
The feasibility of this goal has however been questioned by former president of the conference Claire O’Neil, who argues “we’ve seen a huge lack of leadership and engagement” and are not currently operating at the level to be world leaders.
A Newsnight investigation in conjunction with Greenpeace also found that despite domestic government pledges, the government is still funding fossil fuel projects abroad.

Environmental campaigners and indigenous groups have warned that the policies of Brazil’s populist leader Jair Bolsonaro have heavily contributed to the fires and to the destruction of the rainforest.
Indigenous Chief Raoni Metuktire gathered leaders from across the Amazon to make a stand against further incursion into their lands.

Newsnight has been told by a source on Labour's ruling body, the National Executive Committee, that the new total figure is 576,000.

The last recorded high was in December 2017, where the total number reached 567,400. The party experienced a gradual decrease in membership numbers from 2018 onwards.
This trend only slowly started to be arrested as the general election approached but has reversed quickly in the weeks following.
