- A Co-op store manager from Essex has received a BEM for her work to protect colleagues from abuse.
Claire Saunders said: "We needed people that did abuse shop workers to face a tougher sentence."
The Co-op and Usdaw, the union for shop workers, have been working for three years for greater protection from abusive behaviour for staff.
In December 2021 the government tabled an amendment to make attacking an individual who is providing a public service a statutory aggravating factor.
This means the crime in question would be considered more serious in the eyes of a judge and could result in tougher penalties for anyone found guilty.

For many trapped in fuel poverty and unable to afford to heat their home to an adequate temperature, it is a worrying time and could potentially have a detrimental impact on their health.
Some experts have said costs could jump further as gas prices continue to soar.
Bridgit, a retired schoolteacher from Lewisham, says the cost of living is rising but pensions aren't catching up.

Nelson had previously played his trumpet from a balcony at home during the weekly Clap for Carers during the first lockdown in 2020, where he was cheered by neighbours and became known as "the boy on the balcony".
He has been accompanied at hospitals across London by his five-year-old sister Kaja, who holds the sign, collects cash donations and supports him with some singing.

Mr Watts was admitted to the Woolwich hospital with pneumonia and spent eight months in the intensive care unit. He was in an induced coma for more than five weeks and had five episodes of life-threatening lung collapse. Medics told his family that they might have to consider turning off the life support machine.
Andrew said he was badly affected by the virus because he was in remission from lymph cancer after successful chemotherapy treatment. His lungs improved over the next few months and he came off the ventilator in June 2021.
This Christmas he is recovering at home, where he has been reflecting on his experiences over the past year.

Because of this, Judith created 'From Me To You' - a group which focuses on helping black cancer patients navigate their care and giving them access to further information.

- Description
- London's Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ), in which drivers of older, more polluting vehicles are liable for a daily charge, has expanded.
It means videographer George Alting has to pay an additional £12.50 a day to drive in the zone - something he has to do often when transporting filming equipment to shoots.
The 25-year-old from Croydon wonders if the scheme is 'simply just a price increase' and whether the city is ready. So he attached a sail to a skateboard to protest against the expansion.
City Hall previously said it did not expect to make money, but if it does the funds would be put back into other transport schemes.
A spokesperson for the Mayor of London said: “The Mayor has allocated £61 million to vehicle scrappage, to help low income and disabled Londoners, as well as small businesses and charities, scrap vans, cars and motorcycles that do not comply with the new ULEZ standards."
