- Description
- Debretsion Gebremichael (PhD), chairman of the Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF), held a press briefing 11 August 2024, on current affairs. He addressed the issue of the registration process with the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), where he said registering the TPLF as a new party inherently nullifies the Pretoria Agreement, as it strips ownership away from the agreement, thus breaking the linkage between the party and the agreement.
This comes after the NEBE rejected the TPLF’s request to reinstate its pre-war legal status, instead granting it a certificate of legal personality as a new political party under special conditions.
On 29 July 2024, TPLF Chairman Debretsion disputed the amended bill, saying it only allows outlawed parties to re-register as legitimate organizations and does not meet the party’s expectations. “We will never register as a new party,” he told a regional outlet.

Shiferaw Telila, CEO of Ethiopian Electric Utility (#EEU), recently addressed the issue of frequent power disruptions plaguing the country, particularly in the capital city of #Addis_Abeba. In an interview with state media, Shiferaw attributed these outages primarily to the theft of electrical infrastructure.
Local media reports indicate that residents of Addis Abeba are growing increasingly frustrated with persistent, prolonged, and unscheduled electricity interruptions.
According to EEU, the theft of electricity infrastructure has resulted in substantial financial losses. For the 2023/24 fiscal year alone, the utility company estimates losses exceeding 64 million Birr due to these criminal activities.
The thefts are not limited to the capital. EEU reports that the #Amhara, #Oromia, Southwest Ethiopia, and #Tigray regions have also been significantly affected.

Dr. Dereje Duguma, the state minister of the Ministry of Health, recently stated that more than five million people have been infected with malaria in Ethiopia. According to Dr. Dereje, the increase in malaria cases can be attributed to factors such as climate change, conflict, and negligence.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (#UNOCHA) reports that malaria outbreaks have been documented in 1,397 districts across Ethiopia, marking the highest number of cases reported in 7 years.
While acknowledging the high number of infections, Dr. Dereje maintains that this does not constitute a countrywide outbreak. He noted, "In more than 200 districts, the cases have increased by more than 100% compared to previous years."

Eyob Tekalign (PhD), State Minister of the Ministry of Finance, reported in a recent interview that Ethiopia has mobilized $27 billion following the macro-economic reforms introduced last week.
The government's new macroeconomic reform program includes a shift to a market-based exchange regime, which immediately led to a 40 percent depreciation of the birr.
Expert opinions on these changes vary. Henok Fasil (PhD), a macroeconomist and World Bank consultant in Ethiopia, acknowledges the theoretical merits of a market-based foreign currency regime while expressing concerns about its practical implementation in the Ethiopian context.
Despite potential challenges, Eyob maintains that the mobilized resources are sufficient for the Ethiopian economy. This includes an IMF-approved $3.4 billion funding program and World Bank contributions totaling $1.5 billion in grants and concessional credit.

#Editorial: Security apparatus’s failure to stop kidnapping for ransom is a national crisis. The time for action is now!
Countless incidents of kidnapping for ransom have become all too common stories in today's #Ethiopia, forcing helpless civilians to live in fear of becoming the next victims.
One can discuss and theorize several factors contributing to the proliferation of this criminal act, including the multiple militarized hostilities in #Oromia and #Amhara, two of Ethiopia’s largest regional states. But at the heart of the problem is a lack of will by the country’s political and security leadership to recognize the state of the crisis, a reflection of deeper systemic security failures.
Grandstanding and rhetoric about the effectiveness of the security apparatus have replaced actionable policies and effective law enforcement strategies. Year after year, federal and regional officials ...

The potential devaluation of the Ethiopian Birr has been a topic of ongoing discussion, particularly in light of the country's economic challenges and efforts to secure a loan from the International Monetary Fund (#IMF). In April, Reuters reported that Ethiopia might need to consider a currency devaluation as part of the IMF loan process.
This would not be the first time the Birr has been devalued. In 2017, the Ethiopian currency was devalued by 15% against the US dollar due to foreign currency shortages and other economic factors.
The devaluation issue resurfaced during the parliamentary hearing of the budget proposal for the 2024/25 fiscal year, which was presented to lawmakers on 11 June 2024. Finance Minister Ahmed Shide addressed the question, acknowledging that while devaluation remains an option, the government is carefully weighing the potential consequences and timing of such a decision.
