- Events commemorating the Route 66 Centennial are underway across the Texas Panhandle.
“It’s crazy, it’s totally different than in England, it's totally different, it’s like nothing we’ve ever seen before,” said Cherise Sherdley-Davis, a visitor from Blackpool, England.
After three years of buildup and hype, the week is finally here, it’s the Route 66 Centennial 100th anniversary. It’s not just in Amarillo, it’s from one side of the Texas Panhandle to the other.
“We’ve got a 100-year-old building that was in that matches the 100th year of Route 66, and it really does help our local economy in our area,” said Greg Conn, director of the Milburn-Price Museum.
Rural communities like Vega depend on tourism, and what better way to host a centennial event than to have people come not only from the United States but from other countries to stop in Vega and see the attractions.

They form when the updraft (mitochondria of the storm) strengthens, causing cooler air to lower closer to the ground. This cooler air allows for water vapor to condense, forming clouds. A wall cloud usually rotates along with the updraft.

- Motorcycle riders from across the country will head to the West Texas A&M University campus in Canyon this week for a three-day competition aimed at raising money to support local first responders.
The fifth annual Iron Horse Shoot Out is set to begin Thursday afternoon and will bring in more than 60 motorcycle riders from around the nation to raise money for the 100 Club of the Texas Panhandle.
“We have riders coming from all over the nation,” said Julie Meyer, event manager for the 100 Club of the Texas Panhandle. “There are some that are close in New Mexico and Oklahoma, in parts of Texas, but we've got some coming from Florida, Wisconsin and Missouri. - A new initiative called "A Home for Every Child" is working to ensure every child who enters foster care is placed in a licensed foster home or with relatives.
According to Saint Francis Ministries, about 1,000 children in the Texas Panhandle are currently waiting for a permanent home.
Tracie Jackson with Saint Francis Ministries said the region continues to face a shortage of foster homes, forcing some children to be placed far from their communities.
"Currently, about 30% of kids that are removed are placed out of region, meaning outside of the Panhandle," Jackson said. "So a lot of those are going to Houston or Dallas. And it's obviously a big culture shock."
Jackson said one reason for the shortage is the extensive training and licensing process required for foster families.

It comes after hundreds of voters' ballots sent in for the April election arrived too late, according to the Wisconsin Elections Commission. The WEC said that prompted concern about the delivery speed of mail-in ballots.
"There was a lot of complaints that came from election clerks, municipal clerks, that were saying that it took a long time for ballots to return. Some of them were late in being returned," WEC member Marge Bostelmann said.
A recent letter from the WEC to USPS said two-thirds of Wisconsin clerks reported problems with receiving mail-in ballots during last month's election. Bostelmann said it was the most complaints the WEC has ever gotten about late delivery of ballots.
