- Description
- Six years after losing their son, Nick Cordrey, his family is working to make sure the dreams he wrote down as a teenager are still realized.
Nick Cordrey was 15 when he died after a brain aneurysm. His parents, Aimee and Darren Cordrey, said they have leaned on a bucket list Nick Cordrey kept in a sketchbook and have made it their mission to complete what he didn’t get the chance to finish.
“They played other sports, but that's the one that stuck,” Aimee Cordrey said, describing how soccer became Nick’s first love.
As he got older, she said, he also found a passion for art.
“He stumbled into that by accident freshman year, and it turned into something he truly loved,” said Aimee Cordrey.
After Nick Cordrey died in 2020, his parents said they continued to keep and display his artwork, but it was something written inside one of his sketchbooks that became a driving force for the family.

- A Publix store opening in Mills River is bringing 140 jobs to the area, and the super market chain is holding a job fair that runs through the weekend.
Organizers of the fair, which will continue from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, say there was a good turnout on Friday, especially from teens.
District Manager Brett Thomas tells News 13 that this is a great thing, because the younger they start, the better retention.
"I think Publix is a really good thing that's happening here," said Daniela Herrera-Ortiz, a Carolina Day School student who attended the job fair.
Nathan Ramsey with the Land of Sky Regional Council says the 140 jobs this store, located at 70 Vance Hill Drive, will bring is certainly needed in the western North Carolina region.
"We lost jobs in the past year after Helene, so although our unemployment rate is back to second lowest in North Carolina, we have less people working in our region today than...

- Description
- The North Carolina State Board of Elections, backed by its Republican majority, approved a rule change this week that could make it easier for county election boards to reject a voter's excuse for not having a required photo ID.
Under North Carolina law, voters who arrive at the polls without an acceptable photo ID can still cast a provisional ballot by completing a "reasonable impediment," officially called a photo ID exemption form explaining why they do not have one.
"If you have to be unanimous in an early voting plan, why wouldn't you be unanimous in everything that is this important?" said Robbie Inman, Haywood County's elections director.
Inman has spent 21 years overseeing elections in Haywood County.
As he prepares voting equipment and materials for November's midterm elections, Inman said he worries the rule change could inject more partisanship into decisions over whether ballots should count.

- Looking into the Cherokee Tribal Court system

- Description
- Most people in western North Carolina know Cherokee as a place to visit.
But for the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, the Qualla Boundary is also home to a justice system many people outside the tribe never see.
Inside Cherokee Tribal Court, cases are handled under a separate legal system with its own laws, judges, prosecutors, magistrates, jail, treatment programs and limits set by federal law.
Associate Judge Barbara Parker said those limits are often misunderstood.
“Most people, including probably people in Congress, have no concept of what tribes are or what we can do,” Parker said.
I reviewed Cherokee court disposition reports and the court’s 2025 annual report. One phrase repeatedly stood out: lack of jurisdiction.
From 2023 through August 2025, judges and magistrates ordered 276 criminal dismissals. The annual report shows 231 of them were for lack of jurisdiction. That is 84% of court-ordered d...

- Description
- Buncombe County Parks and Recreation is offering a colorful new opportunity this summer for beginning artists - a guided painting session called Painting in the Park.
For Buncombe County Parks and Recreation Program Assistant and session teacher Caitlyn Fogarty, it's all about giving people a way to express themselves.
"Sometimes it's hard to just sit down and paint in your house," Fogarty said.
The Painting in the Park series guides beginners on painting basics and how to use colors together.
"We'll kind of all paint the same thing, but I definitely encourage people to kind of make it their own" Fogarty said.
Fogarty says all are welcome, regardless of skill level.
For some, this is the artistic outlet they didn't know they needed.

- Asheville leaders said they're making progress on one of the city's biggest challenges, affordable housing.
Asheville Affordable Housing Officer Sasha Vrtunski said hundreds of affordable homes are now complete, under construction or in the pipeline as they work to address a growing housing shortage.
"Really, this is housing for our neighbors, the people we see at the grocery store, our teachers and our service workers in restaurants," said Vrtunski. "We definitely know that a lot of people are struggling."
Vrtunski said the city's investment is aimed at helping working families stay in the community. According to Asheville's 2024 Housing Needs Assessment, the city needs significantly more rental housing and homeownership options to keep up with demand.
Over the past four years, the Asheville City Council has approved nearly $30 million for affordable housing initiatives. Those investments include rental apartments, homes for first-ti...

- Texas is expanding its response to severe flooding as state leaders warn another round of heavy rain could bring more dangerous conditions to parts of Central and South Texas.
During a Thursday briefing at the State Operations Center, Gov. Greg Abbott said protecting lives remains the state’s top priority as life-threatening flooding continues.
“Once again, life-threatening catastrophic flooding remains our main risk tonight and overnight through the early morning hours,” Abbott said.
Abbott said 59 counties remain under a flood watch, with Uvalde and Johnson City among the communities facing the greatest risk over the next 24 hours. He also warned that record river levels are expected in several locations, including along the Nueces River near Uvalde.
The state has expanded its emergency response since Wednesday, with about 2,350 emergency responders now deployed along with more than 1,400 vehicles and pieces of equipment, including more than 85 boats, 21...

- Description
- Buncombe County homeowners will see a different approach to their property taxes this year after county commissioners approved a change tied to a new state law.
Commissioners voted to use 2025 property values for this year’s tax bills after the state delayed the county’s scheduled 2026 property reappraisal until next year.
The delay left county leaders with two options: cut nearly $25 million from the county budget or use last year’s property values while adjusting the tax rate.
"The state legislation that came out was around the real estate values that the county would use in your tax bills... the value that you had last year, 2025, is the property tax value that you will have this year. It's simply delayed the use of the revaluation for a year," Buncombe County Manager Avril Pinder said.
Under the approved plan, the county will use 2025 property values and increase the county tax rate to 61.54 cents per $100 of assessed value....

- WNC county's budget amendment amid state law changes

- Description
- After spending several months developing next year's budget, Buncombe County commissioners have now voted on an amendment.
"Having to meet this evening and make budget amendments really undoes all of the work that we have put in as commissioners and county staff have put in over the last seven months," said Amanda Edwards, chair of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners.
The vote comes amid recent legislation. Senate Bill 889 places a moratorium or a one-year delay on applying updated property values for tax purposes. But the county used those values when setting the tax rate when it passed its budget.
On July 1, Senate Bill 474 passed. It offers Buncombe County a potential exemption from the moratorium, but only if the county adopts a revenue-neutral tax rate rounded to the nearest penny.
"If we stay at 26 values and revenue neutral, we will be looking at approximately a 25-million-dollar reduction in the budget that we approved,...

- Staff at one of the largest domestic violence shelters in western North Carolina said that ever since Helene, there has been an increased demand in people seeking emergency shelter with people staying there three times longer than they used to over the past two years.
Now, after recently expanding, the shelter is adding more staff to the team to keep up with the uptick of those urgently seeking a safe place to stay.
“It feels like a lot – we have a lot of need,” Safelight CEO Lauren Wilkie told News 13. “Folks are having more mental health, more medical needs and getting treatment is hard to access and it’s expensive. So we have a lot of acute needs that we work through.”
Safelight, a nonprofit agency supporting survivors of violence, abuse and exploitation, has been working to fill gaps across the community. Wilkie said growing the team was the only way to support how it converted a floor, previously used for staff offices, into nearl...

This comes after it was revealed that Priscilla Hendrix, owner of Blackford Wellness, faces 10 felony charges after investigators accused her of diagnosing clients and distributing prescription weight-loss medication without a North Carolina medical license.
Hendrix operated her wellness business out of a medical office she rented on Mt. Carmel Drive in Asheville, but near her home in Leicester. On Tuesday, July 14, News 13 visited both locations in an attempt to speak with Hendrix, but no one answered.
Charity Ogle, a former client of Hendrix's, spoke Tuesday, saying she was angry and frustrated by what she now believes was a con by Hendrix for her and other clients. Ogle said a friend referred her to Hendrix, whom she initially felt was legitimate.

- Description
- Nearly two years after a wrong-way crash claimed the life of a 21-year-old Durham man, his parents have filed a wrongful death lawsuit against a downtown Asheville bar, alleging it illegally served alcohol to a woman who was already intoxicated before the deadly collision.
Lori Hudson and Anthony Henshaw, the parents of Caleb Hudson Henshaw, who died in the crash, filed the lawsuit against The Bier Garden and Eden Alexis Jo Russo.
According to the complaint, Russo was served alcohol at The Bier Garden on Sept. 8, 2024, despite allegedly already being impaired. The lawsuit claims she then left the bar, drove the wrong way on Interstate 40, sideswiped two vehicles near mile marker 43, before colliding head-on with Henshaw's vehicle, killing him. The complaint alleges Russo was traveling about 75 miles per hour at the time of the crash.
The lawsuit also alleges Russo refused a breathalyzer test at the scene. Officers later determined that her blood a...
