The Center for Renewing America argues the phenomenon deserves greater attention as debates over socialism, capitalism and American institutions increasingly play out in politics, on college campuses and among younger generations.
Speaking with The National News Desk, Wade Miller, executive director of the Center for Renewing America, described the term as referring broadly to cooperation between Marxist and Islamist movements.

- The stands at Swain County High School's football field will be a little quieter on Friday, Sept. 4, after the school canceled its game due to numerous player injuries.
The announcement came early Tuesday, Sept. 1, stating that the Maroon Devils will not face the Franklin Mustangs out of concern for players' safety and well-being.
"There was concerns with the number of active players and so they looked at that Monday, and they addressed it with the team to reengage, remeasure the injury report and then decided at that point in time that we did not have enough active players," said Brandon Sutton, Swain County Schools Superintendent.
Starting the season with 23 players, dressing 15 players for the team's last game against the Pisgah High School Bears, that number started to shrink.

- A growing number of American teenagers are turning to artificial intelligence for help with depression, anxiety and other mental health concerns, raising new questions about what happens when a chatbot begins taking the place of human connection.
New research shows roughly 1 in 5 teens has used AI for mental health advice, a trend that concerns some mental health professionals because those conversations can happen privately, without parents or other trusted adults knowing.
Speaking with The National News Desk, Dr. Josef Witt-Doerring, senior fellow of psychiatry at the Independent Medical Alliance, said his biggest concern is that teenagers may begin treating AI as more than an occasional source of information.

- Nearly two years after Helene devastated western North Carolina, the Cathedral of All Souls in Asheville's Biltmore Village remains a powerful reminder of both the storm's destruction and the community's determination to rebuild.
The historic church was inundated when Helene struck the region on Sept. 27, 2024. Floodwaters pushed through the church's doors and rose from the basement into the nave, damaging much of the building. Rev. Sarah Hurlburt remembers seeing the force of the flooding as she approached the church that morning.
“As we were standing at that intersection, we looked, and a construction-size dumpster was rushing by through the intersection,” Hurlburt recalled. “It was terrifying.”
Inside the sanctuary, the rising water tossed the church’s massive solid-oak pews around the room, she says, like “tinker toys.” All Souls had survived major floods in 1916 and 2004, but Helene was different.

- When community paramedics arrive after an overdose, their work doesn’t end once the immediate emergency is over. They are using that critical window to connect people with treatment, recovery and other resources, in an approach Buncombe County officials said is helping address the opioid crisis.
Between 2022 and 2025, overdose deaths in the county fell 46%, according to Buncombe County leaders. The Community Paramedic Program is one of several initiatives aimed at continuing that progress. Program leaders said fentanyl is now showing up in every substance, making the risk even greater.

- Nearly six months after 27-year-old Eric Lee Anderson Lordman Jr. was shot and killed at Pisgah View Apartments, his family is still searching for answers as the Asheville Police Department continues investigating the case.
Lordman was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds near Granada Street shortly after midnight on March 7, according to APD. No arrests have been announced.
His stepmother, Toya Anderson, has been distributing flyers and asking people in the community to help keep the case in the public eye.
“I had these flyers printed out, and I have asked some of the people in the community to post them up,” Anderson said.
Anderson said Lordman was born and raised in Pisgah View and leaves behind four children.

For Budd, the timing gives WNC a chance to show both its progress and what remains unfinished.

Jurors reached the verdict after less than three hours of deliberations. It ended a roughly two-week trial featuring testimony from more than 20 witnesses and focusing heavily on statements Duane “Keffe D” Davis made about the killing over several decades.
Davis, 63, stood next to his defense attorney, Michael Sanft, as the verdict was read inside Clark County District Court. Davis’ son appeared to cover his face with his hand after hearing the decision. Members of Shakur’s family embraced in the courtroom, with one person raising an arm and fist into the air before leaving the courtroom.

- Florida is getting rid of permits for Flock cameras and similar license-plate reading technology on state roads, according to a memorandum from the Florida Department of Transportation.
FDOT Assistant Secretary Will Watts gave agencies 30 days to remove the cameras from state roads, or FDOT will do it itself. FDOT also says that all previously approved LPR-related permits are being revoked immediately.
Additionally, FDOT says it will no longer approve future requests for license plate reader systems within its jurisdiction.

- The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) has identified an Exxon gas station in Hendersonville as another potential measles exposure site after an out-of-state resident with the disease traveled through western North Carolina while contagious. The exposure is connected to the previously identified site in Asheville, which was first announced Sunday, Aug. 30.
NCDHHS says anyone who was at the Exxon at 1920 Four Seasons Blvd. in Hendersonville on Aug. 25 from 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. or the Holiday Inn Express at 435 Smokey Park Highway in Asheville on Aug. 26 from 1 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. may have been exposed to measles.

Members of the House Intelligence Committee met Monday in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where the 40 passengers and crew members aboard United Airlines Flight 93 lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.
Passengers and crew fought back against the hijackers, forcing the plane down in a field before it could reach its intended target, believed to have been either the U.S. Capitol or the White House.
“The story of those on Flight 93 is one of unimaginable courage and sacrifice,” House Intelligence Committee ranking member Jim Himes said.

Following Parton’s death at age 80, that connection is being felt across western North Carolina — including inside Asheville record stores and through local musicians inspired by her work.
At Records in the RAD in west Asheville, owner Susan Haynes says customers are already looking for Parton’s music.
“Everyone loved Dolly,” Haynes said.
Haynes said she sold three Dolly Parton records the day of Parton’s death, and the first record she sold the following morning was another Dolly album.
