- Description
- Former North Carolina Governor and U.S. Senate candidate Roy Cooper brought his “Make Stuff Cost Less” tour to Asheville on Friday, focusing on what he said are plans to make life more affordable for North Carolinians.
The event was held at the Buncombe County Democratic Party headquarters, where a packed room of supporters listened as Cooper talked about lowering health care costs and addressing the impact of tariffs.
Cooper highlighted his time as governor, saying his administration helped wipe away $6.5 billion in health care debt for people across the state. He said those efforts are now at risk under the current administration.
He also criticized tariffs, saying they are putting pressure on farmers and small businesses.
“Take back its [the legislative branch's] constitutional authority on trade and tariffs, on declaration of war, on budgetary matters,” Cooper said. “We need to elect people who do that — people who car...

- Description
- For generations, the story of the Cherokee people has often been told by outsiders. At the Museum of the Cherokee People, they are working to change that by ensuring Cherokee history, culture and identity are presented through Cherokee voices.
Located on the Qualla Boundary in western North Carolina, the museum is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of the Cherokee people. Museum leaders say part of their mission is to correct misconceptions and reclaim a narrative that has frequently been shaped by others.
"For hundreds of years, historians have told our story for us, and so now we're telling our story for ourselves," said Shana Bushyhead Condill, executive director at the museum.
Founded in 1948, the museum was established in part to attract tourism and generate income for the Cherokee community. In its early years, exhibits sometimes incorporated popular but inaccurate stereotypes of Native Americans, including teepees and headdress...

- As the Taylor's Wave project in Woodfin progresses, Woodfin Town Manager Shannon Tuch is encouraging kayakers and paddlers to contain their excitement for when the project officially opens later this year.
The first part of the two-piece project opened earlier this year with water flowing over the wave structure that generates the standing wave.
A video sent to News 13, shown below, shows nearly 20 kayakers on the wave, which town officials are advising against since the second part of the project is currently under construction.
"We understand the enthusiasm, and we're really happy that people are excited about it, but out of an abundance of caution, we really want people to try and temper their enthusiasm and just wait for the project to be done," Tuch said.
The active construction site and potential hazards are the main concerns for kayakers wanting to use the artificial wave.

- Madison County is moving forward with plans for a new courthouse, while the future of Marshall's historic courthouse remains undecided.
Built in 1907, the courthouse has long served as a centerpiece of downtown Marshall. Helene damaged the building heavily, so it has remained closed since the storm.
As the town continues its recovery, business owners and residents say they hope the historic building can play a role in attracting visitors and supporting economic growth.
"There’s an opportunity to bring in foot traffic from outside of Marshall, from Asheville, from Waynesville, from Weaverville into Marshall to help bring those dollars into Marshall, which is going to help us continue to rebuild," Full Moon Tea Company owner Katie McDonald said.
Community members say the courthouse could serve a new purpose while preserving its place in the town's history.

"The sheriff’s office did make a drive-by to see if anyone was at home, but no one came to the door and there were two cars parked outside, but all of their phones are off and you can’t get ahold of anyone," the family member who called 911 said.
The 911 caller said three of their family members had been missing for two weeks.
As News 13 previously reported, the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office was called to 18 Ashworth Drive in Fairview on May 7, where they found three people dead inside: Travis Eugene Grant, 41, Kimberly Michelle Grant, 42, and Sharon Harwood Grant, 66.

- Caregiving costs are putting growing financial pressure on families, with some saying they are forced to cut work hours or leave jobs just to manage care at home.
At Aeroflow Health, a local medical equipment supplier company, shipments are constantly moving in and out as medical supplies are delivered to caregivers who rely on them every day. The company says rising costs are stretching many families’ budgets.
"My mom is now living with the most advanced stage of Alzheimer's disease, and so I'm responsible for feeding her, giving her every sip of water, changing her, moving her so that she can get as much engagement as possible," Jessica Guthrie, a caregiver, said.
Guthrie says the cost adds up every month.
"Buying supplies like bed pads, briefs, catheters, wipes, gloves, all of that has increased in terms of the monthly cost, and so I'm spending about $600 a month on basic supplies," Guthrie said.

- Two women who helped preserve downtown Asheville’s rich and storied history are being remembered with the legacy they left behind, an Urban Trail walking tour more than 2 miles long.
Asheville residents Grace Pless and Leslie Anderson launched the Urban Trail project more than 40 years ago.
But both women died within the last year and a half, so on Wednesday, June 24, a group of volunteers held a ceremony to celebrate the pioneers. It was held along the downtown walking trail, made up of 33 stations marking monuments and moments in time.
“We have such a rich history here. So many folks came to town who were guests of the Vanderbilts way back when, many of those talented artists or others, stayed in Asheville,” said Amy Fleming, daughter of founder Grace Pless.
The plaques are also meant to memorialize some of the city’s trailblazers.

Helene damage forced the closure of the lone pool that operated in the county, owned and funded by Hendersonville. It’s located at Patton Park off State Road 25 about 2 miles north of downtown Hendersonville.
Hendersonville City Manager John Connet said the city continues to wait for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) approval of funds to rebuild and upgrade the 50-year-old pool. Connet said it will likely be at least 2028 before a pool is built.
He said the project will be the most expensive capital park project in the town’s history, costing around $20 million. The FEMA application is requesting nearly $18 million.
“That pool was always like a summer fun activity to do with kids,” said Hendersonville resident Nohemi Peralta.

As millions of Americans search for Prime Day deals and other summer sales, cybersecurity experts are warning consumers to be on the lookout for fake shopping websites, phishing emails, scam text messages, and fraudulent advertisements designed to steal personal information and financial data.
Speaking with The National News Desk, cybersecurity expert and privacy attorney Leeza Garber said the combination of limited-time discounts, urgency, and high online traffic creates ideal conditions for scammers.
"Shopping season is exciting, but it's also the perfect storm for cybercriminals," Garber said.
She explained that many scams rely on creating a false sense of urgency, whether it's claiming you've won a gift card, offering an exclusive discount, or warning that a package has been delayed or lost. Those messages often encourage users to click on links that a...

Steve Pettis, NC Cooperative Extension Agent for Henderson County, wrote a news release in 2021, highlighting how the nocturnal animal, considered a pest, began appearing in North Carolina.
Pettis says armadillos made their way north, eventually reaching North Carolina in 2008, where he believes sightings will increase within the next couple of years.
"What happens with any creatures, especially invasive creatures, whether it's a plant or an animal, is you start up with a small number of them and the population will slowly build and then eventually, once you reach critical mass of a population, then the population skyrockets," Pettis said.
Pettis says North Carolina is in the build-up phase of that skyrocket.

“The market right now is way more of a buyer’s market than I’ve ever seen. I’ve been doing real estate with GreyBeard for eight years now,” said Lutz.
Lutz says homeowners who received largely higher valuations from Buncombe County’s tax office this spring don’t feel the numbers square with their current home’s values.
“They were concerned they were going to have to pay a lot more in property taxes," said Lutz.
On Friday, June 19, North Carolina Governor Josh Stein signed a bill into law that would freeze home valuations from the prior year, with the concept that tax bills would stay in check. But this week, legislators will vote on another bill, SB 474, that could remove Buncombe County from the reappraisal freeze.

The event featured live music from the Chatham Rabbits, local food and fundraising efforts benefiting communities still recovering from Helene's devastation, including Bat Cave, Chimney Rock and Lake Lure.
"We’re wanting to engage members of our community as well as our parish family to support our community," said Rev. Dr. Kathy Hulin of the Episcopal Church of St. John in the Wilderness.
While recovery efforts have progressed since the storm, church leaders say many residents continue to face significant challenges.
"They're still suffering from the damage, still need community support, people to rally around them and show them tha...

- A coalition of teenagers is advocating for state legislation that aims to make it harder for teenagers to get their hands on nicotine products.
The legislation is called Solly's Law, named after Solomon Wynn, a New Hanover County high school student who died in 2023 from complications related to vaping.
If passed, the House Bill 430 would raise the legal sales age of tobacco products to 21, while also requiring a tobacco retail sales permit.
"You cannot walk into a bathroom without having at least a little bit of vape in your life. It's insane. They're everywhere," said William Hopper, T.C. Roberson High School Student.
Hopper says he's seen firsthand the prevalence of nicotine, specifically vape products, among teenagers, highlighting that passing Solly's Law is essential.
"It's just so easy to get your hands on and it's not going to stop unless we get tight regulation. I mean, schools are just overrun with it. I mean, i...

- As law enforcement agencies across western North Carolina continue to face staffing shortages, the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office is looking to a new class of graduates to help fill vacancies within the department.
Several cadets graduated Thursday from A-B Tech's Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) program and are preparing to begin their careers with the sheriff's office.
The new hires arrive as the agency continues to deal with staffing challenges that officials say have been ongoing for months.
"Our numbers have been kind of like really high with vacancies over the last year or so since Helene. Because families have had to move away. It just created a huge problem with some folks monetarily," said Kendra Cowan, human resources manager for the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office.
According to the sheriff's office, there are currently about 60 vacancies across patrol and detention positions.

- A new WalletHub report shows North Carolina ranks as the eighth-worst state for debt delinquency.
News 13 reached out to OnTrack WNC, a local organization that helps people improve their financial stability. Rebecca Strimer, who is with the organization, says she’s not surprised at the state’s ranking.
"People are facing really high housing costs in our region in particular," said Strimer.
She says the affordability crisis is making it harder for people to keep up with bills and avoid debt.
"For me at one point, I know that my rent jumped from one lease to another by $300, so that’s an extra $300 a month all of a sudden I wasn’t planning on using or I could put in savings that now has to go towards my rent," said Asheville Resident Mike DeSerio.
He says a lack of financial education and blind spots in his money management led to him into debt.
"Working around raising prices, I would end up kind of lea...

- Nearly 200 students graduated from South College Asheville on Friday, earning degrees in healthcare and other fields as North Carolina continues to face workforce shortages, particularly in nursing.
College leaders said many of the graduates are expected to remain in western North Carolina and begin their careers locally.
“For the most part, students are local to the area and are excited about getting ready to work in the healthcare-related fields here in Buncombe County,” campus president of South College Asheville campus president Samantha Sircey, said.
Among the graduates were twin sisters Christina and Abigail Vartabedian, both of whom are entering the nursing profession.
For Christina Vartabedian, the decision to pursue nursing was shaped by a childhood experience involving a misdiagnosis. She said that experience inspired her commitment to patient care and advocacy.

- A Swannanoa pizza restaurant was forced to close for a day after the founder said thieves cut and stole internet wiring connected to the business, disrupting critical operations and costing the owner thousands of dollars in lost revenue.
George Peyton, founder of Good Company Pizza, arrived at work on Saturday, June 6, to find the restaurant without internet service. After investigating, he discovered that Spectrum lines behind the building had been cut and removed.
“They cut it on this side of the fence,” Peyton said while pointing to the damaged infrastructure. Fragments of wire remained scattered near the scene.
The suspected theft had an immediate impact on the restaurant’s ability to operate. Without internet service, Good Company Pizza lost access to its phone lines, online ordering system and ticket-printing capabilities.
“We couldn't take phone orders, and that's about 80 to 85% of the business,” Peyton said.<...

- Description
- Drivers across North Carolina could soon see more license plate reader cameras along highways if state lawmakers approve legislation making a pilot program permanent.
House Bill 206 would allow the State Bureau of Investigation's highway license plate reader program to continue beyond its current July 1 expiration date. The bill has already passed the North Carolina House and is now under consideration in the Senate before heading to Governor Josh Stein's desk.
Asheville is one of several cities participating in the pilot program, which allows local law enforcement agencies to place license plate reader cameras on state-owned property, primarily highways.
"Currently, you're not allowed to place cameras on state property," said Asheville Police Department Lt. Josh Meindl. "The pilot program has allowed waivers to allow that to happen in limited circumstances."
The proposal comes as some community members raise concerns about privacy an...

- Buncombe County has moved the Independence Day celebration from Lake Julian Park, citing nearby construction as the reason.
Allison Dains, director for Buncombe County Parks and Recreation, says the move of the event was out of necessity.
"There is construction that is going on adjacent to the launch site for where we launch the fireworks here at Lake Julian, and so we no longer had access to that launch site, as well as the fall zone required [which] is affected by the construction that is going on," Dains said.
As previously reported, construction located off Long Shoals Road on Butler Road in Asheville is for a new apartment complex called Ellison Lake Julian. The apartment complex will include 279 units across five buildings.
Dains said that safety is the county's priority.
"The ability to maintain proper safety zones and protocol zones and fallout for permitting is extremely important and with the construction that i...

- Twenty months after Helene, thousands of pounds of PVC pipe linked to international pipe manufacturer IPEX continue to be removed from the French Broad River, according to local environmental groups.
The ongoing cleanup has raised questions about accountability and enforcement, as nonprofits say they have spent significant time and taxpayer resources removing debris that washed into the river during the storm.
The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality said state rules prohibit the intentional dumping of waste into waterways but do not specifically address releases caused by unexpected events such as natural disasters.
MountainTrue leaders said floodwaters along the Woodfin stretch of the French Broad River swept away materials stored in floodplains, including PVC pipe from IPEX.
French Broad Riverkeeper Anna Alsobrook said cleanup efforts have been extensive.

- Relief is on the way for a Mitchell County community considered a food desert following Helene.
Ingles has confirmed to News 13 that they have selected a new site for a grocery store location in Spruce Pine and they are beginning development plans. The Spruce Pine store was damaged beyond repair during Helene.
Spruce Pine Town Manager Daniel Stines said the new location will be along Highway 19 between Greenwood Road and NC-226A.
"They have closed on the property, so they do own it," said Stines.
As for a construction timeline, the Ingles chief financial officer said it's too early to say. However, Stines said work on the project could start as early as August.
Damage from Helene forced the closure of the original Ingles in Spruce Pine, forcing people to drive miles to get groceries.

- A day after News 13 reported the U.S. Department of Education opened a Title IX investigation into Buncombe County Schools, we're taking a closer look at the district's bathroom policy for transgender students and hearing reactions.
The school system's guidelines state transgender students must have access to safe restrooms and locker rooms and are not required to use a facility that conflicts with the student's gender identity.
The U.S. Department of Education this week announced its Office for Civil Rights has opened an investigation into Buncombe County Schools after a concerned parent alleged the district is allowing transgender students to use girls' restrooms, which the Department described as permitting "biological men" to access these restrooms.
Kimberly Richey, assistant secretary for civil rights with the Department of Education, said such a practice violates girls' rights to equal access to educational opportunities and "puts female stu...
