- Description
- The number of people injured or killed in gun incidents in Asheville declined this summer compared with the same period last year.
From June 1 through Aug. 31, Asheville Police Department (APD) data show 16 victims were injured or killed in shooting incidents in 2026, compared to 22 victims during the same summertime months in 2025.
The number of specific shooting incidents resulting in death or injury also fell from 13 incidents in 2025 to eight incidents this summer. In July, APD recorded 46 reports of shots fired, down from 53 in July 2025, according to online data published by APD.
This decline comes as communities across the country continue to see a broader downward trend in gun violence, per national reporting and data.
Summer is often a time when cities, including Asheville, see shootings increase. While Asheville experienced the deadly Biltmore Avenue shooting in July, overall gun violence numbers were down this summer. T...

- Oil prices are climbing again, and drivers across western North Carolina say they're already feeling the impact at the pump.
For the first time since July, international Brent crude is trading above the $100-a-barrel threshold, with oil prices jumping more than 3% on Wednesday.
The increase comes as the U.S. war with Iran has dramatically slowed the movement of oil through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies. President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the higher prices could continue for at least the next two months.
For drivers, that means another round of difficult decisions when it comes time to fill up.
“I gotta pay my own gas, but with all these prices going up, I can only fill me up half a tank, you know what I mean?” said WNC driver Victoria Sorto.
Sorto isn't alone. People who depend on their vehicles for work say higher fuel costs can quickly eat into their income.

Court records show 54-year-old William Fredrick Bierlein was arrested in Asheville on June 30 before being extradited to the Clark County Detention Center in Nevada on Sept. 3.
Bierlein is connected to a crash that killed a Nevada newspaper carrier in 2008. An investigation into the deadly crash determined alcohol was a factor, according to Nevada authorities.
In 2012, Bierlein was convicted of felony reckless driving and received a suspended prison sentence of 28 to 72 months and up to four years of probation. His probation included no alcohol, a substance evaluation and DNA testing.

- The Brevard Police Department has withdrawn a proposal to install three automatic license plate reader cameras within city limits after community feedback raised concerns about privacy, safeguards and trust in the department.
Police Chief Christy Wentzell said the department initially considered the Axon ALPR cameras to give its limited staff additional tools to investigate crimes.
"We are a smaller department. We have limited staff, so the cameras would have been what I call a force multiplier, additional eyes in the city per se," Wentzell said.
The cameras were also offered as part of a larger technology package as the department upgrades other equipment.
The proposal was discussed during a series of Public Safety Committee meetings over the summer. In August, the committee recommended the city hold a public information and listening session before the proposal moved to the full council.

- The United States hit Canada with new tariffs, and Canada hit back — and now businesses and consumers on both sides of the border are sorting out the fallout. In some battleground states, the trade dispute is turning into a midterm campaign issue in its own right.
"We might see this price go up from $24.99 to $26 or $29.99," said Kristin Roehmer, owner of Kidsop Toys and Books in Scottsdale, AZ. She said she's preparing now with inventory before prices potentially go up and get passed on to customers.
The impact is being felt north of the border as well.
"Retaliatory tariffs are not something I'm gonna be celebrating as... I don't want to see American beekeepers hurt. I don't want to see any other farmers hurt," said Richard Ozero, owner of Good Morning Honey in Canada. "We're in a trade war that determines which farmer gets hurt. That's all we want is a functioning market back."

Interim Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Reed discussed the potential staffing reductions during the Sept. 3 Board of Education meeting.
The district hopes to eliminate positions as employees retire, resign or leave for other jobs, rather than through layoffs. Officials have not yet said which jobs could be affected. Reed said the district is facing several financial pressures, including declining enrollment.
“We're still off around 300 students from what we had last year,” Reed said. “It indicates that our state funding will be less, most likely going into the '27-'28 school year.”
Chief Financial Officer Tina Thorpe said federal cuts are adding to the district’s financial pressure.

- WASHINGTON, D.C. (TNND) — Political activist Charlie Kirk was killed nearly a year ago, and as the anniversary approaches, so do the eulogies.
His divisive debates delighted conservatives but angered liberals, making him a sweetheart among Washington’s most MAGA politicians. Senator Mike Lee, the right-wing Utah Republican, said Tuesday that Kirk would’ve become president.
“He’d have been the most effective and successful conservative politician in more than a century,” Lee wrote on X. “So they killed him.”
Only one suspect, 23-year-old Tyler Robinson, has been charged with Kirk’s killing, and authorities believe he acted alone. His alleged motives haven’t yet been discussed in court—his case was just allowed Tuesday to proceed to trial—but officials say Kirk’s rhetoric was a factor. The activist used his large audience to promote controversial opinions, including that the Second Amendment is worth the gun deaths its critics say it cause...

"I feel like my neighbors and I are under attack – broken elevators, no heat or air conditioning, unsafe living conditions," one woman told councilmembers.
"Many of us also had no air conditioning in the summer," said Priya Ray, a volunteer with the Asheville Area Tenants' Union.
The Asheville Area Tenants Union pushed for the amendment, arguing that renters should not be required to continue paying for housing deemed unsafe.
Under the amendment, a city inspector would first have to determine that a rental property has conditions that make it unsafe. Those conditions could include a lack of hot water, the presence of raw sewage or missing sm...

- Nearly two years after Helene wiped out dozens of affordable homes in Hendersonville, $16.8 million in federal funding is expected to help rebuild them as the city faces an ongoing shortage of housing residents can afford.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced the award to the Hendersonville Affordable Housing Corporation for Lincoln Circle and Robinson Terrace as part of $137 million recently approved for 114 recovery and mitigation projects across North Carolina.
The money comes as housing remains a growing challenge locally. Hendersonville’s 2026 Strategic Housing Plan estimates Henderson County will need about 10,000 additional housing units over the next five years.
The Housing Authority currently offers 375 affordable dwelling units for low and moderate income families, the elderly and those with disabilities. Still, housing officials said demand remains high and the storm exacerbated it.

- Four health care systems are competing for approval to add 92 hospital beds in western North Carolina. But why does the state have to choose just one? That's the question from a viewer named David, who wrote to Ask 13 after learning about the competition involving Mission Health, Novant Health, UNC Health and AdventHealth.
"We can use all four in this area. It makes no sense to restrict the applicants. Let them all build. Great for competition and a choice of better care," he wrote.
The answer comes down to a decades-old North Carolina law: the Certificate of Need process.
North Carolina requires healthcare providers to receive state approval before adding certain hospital beds, facilities, or services. The state first began requiring approval for hospitals to add beds in 1971. After that law was struck down by the North Carolina Supreme Court, lawmakers reinstated a broader Certificate of Need system in 1978.

- A growing number of American teenagers are turning to artificial intelligence for help with depression, anxiety and other mental health concerns, raising new questions about what happens when a chatbot begins taking the place of human connection.
New research shows roughly 1 in 5 teens has used AI for mental health advice, a trend that concerns some mental health professionals because those conversations can happen privately, without parents or other trusted adults knowing.
Speaking with The National News Desk, Dr. Josef Witt-Doerring, senior fellow of psychiatry at the Independent Medical Alliance, said his biggest concern is that teenagers may begin treating AI as more than an occasional source of information.
"I'm really worried about it because, to me, what I think they're really using it for is actually a social companion," Witt-Doerring said.

Color typically begins at the highest elevations before moving down the mountainsides.
"Color starts at the higher elevations simply because of the temperature," Mathews said. "If you go upward, up the mountains, the temperatures are cooler as well."
There are also encouraging signs for this year. Mathews says rainfall earlier this summer has left trees healthy despite some drought.

- Description
- The Town of Sylva in North Carolina is looking to decommission an aging, non-operational dam after a notice of deficiency from the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) in the fall of 2025.
The 29-foot earthen embankment, which can hold nearly 8 million gallons of water when filled, was opened in the 1970s, but after a new dam in Cullowhee was built, the Sylva dam became non-operational.
"When the Tuckaseigee Water and Sewer Authority formed in the early ‘90s, they had their intake on that side, so that pretty much rendered this dam [Sylva dam] and impoundment obsolete," said Jake Scott, Sylva’s public works director.
Nearly 30 years later, the town received a notice of deficiency from NCDEQ, finding issues with the dam.
NCDEQ is offering the town four solutions, including repairing the dam, which is something Scott says does not address long-term costs like updating flood modeling every 10 years and submittin...

- Description
- For nearly two years, a group of Henderson County families has struggled to get home. Twelve families living along Jane Way Drive lost their only connection to the main road when Helene washed away their bridge.
The storm left behind more than just debris. It cut residents off from their community and forced them to find their own way across the river. Resident Jerry Flockner remembers seeing the damage for the first time.
“There is no bridge,” Flockner said. “The whole bridge was washed away. We found pieces of it a mile down the river.”
Flockner said he was trapped for six days after the storm.
“What I did was, I took my wife across in my skid steer to get across the river,” Flockner said.
For the next year and a half, residents relied on a makeshift bridge they built themselves, knowing every trip across came with risks. Now, nearly two years after Helene, those families finally have a safe and permanent way home....

- Description
- Hendersonville Police Chief Blair Myhand is defending the use of Flock Safety license plate readers as some residents continue to question whether the technology could lead to broader surveillance.
Myhand addressed the concerns during a Hendersonville City Council meeting Thursday night, arguing that the cameras currently in use in the city and Henderson County are not designed to track people or monitor their movements.
“The thought that license plate recognition systems are a surveillance tool is not accurate,” Myhand told council members.
Flock cameras capture images of vehicles and their license plates as they pass a camera. Myhand said those images represent a specific moment in time and are used by investigators as leads.
“There is no surveillance. There is no tracking of movement,” Myhand said. “That image is only an investigative lead. It is not probable cause.”
Myhand also emphasized that the system d...

- Description
- Oregon authorities released dramatic video showing 53-year-old Erik Shunn allegedly firing at arborists, law enforcement and a SWAT team drone during a standoff near Oregon City after becoming angry over trees being cut down that he believed belonged to him.
Investigators say Shunn fired more than 200 shots, attempted to create a barricade with a tractor and was ultimately arrested after a SWAT vehicle pinned him and the tractor against a house.
One arborist reported a bullet striking a log about six inches from him before he crawled to safety. Court documents say Shunn appeared intoxicated, and authorities say he was already prohibited from possessing firearms due to previous criminal cases.
He now faces several charges, including attempted murder, and is being held without bail.

- Panera Bread is gone from South Asheville, but what's coming to the now-cleared site?
A viewer named Shawn wrote to Ask 13 about the former Panera location on Hendersonville Road:
"What is happening with the Panera on Hendersonville Road near Gerber Village? I noticed the sign came down and now the whole lot has been cleared. What is going in there?"
The restaurant closed its doors at the beginning of July after its lease was not renewed. The chain restaurant's South Asheville location had been a neighborhood staple since the early 2010s. It was also Panera's first location in western North Carolina.
Now, the restaurant is gone, and the site has been cleared. So, what's next? Nothing has been officially announced yet.
Pulliam Properties owns the property, and owner Rusty Pulliam says he is currently working with several interested commercial users for the site.

- A national policy organization is raising concerns about what it describes as a growing "Red-Green Alliance," an ideological partnership between some far-left and Islamist movements united by opposition to Western political institutions despite having significantly different long-term goals.
The Center for Renewing America argues the phenomenon deserves greater attention as debates over socialism, capitalism and American institutions increasingly play out in politics, on college campuses and among younger generations.
Speaking with The National News Desk, Wade Miller, executive director of the Center for Renewing America, described the term as referring broadly to cooperation between Marxist and Islamist movements.

- The stands at Swain County High School's football field will be a little quieter on Friday, Sept. 4, after the school canceled its game due to numerous player injuries.
The announcement came early Tuesday, Sept. 1, stating that the Maroon Devils will not face the Franklin Mustangs out of concern for players' safety and well-being.
"There was concerns with the number of active players and so they looked at that Monday, and they addressed it with the team to reengage, remeasure the injury report and then decided at that point in time that we did not have enough active players," said Brandon Sutton, Swain County Schools Superintendent.
Starting the season with 23 players, dressing 15 players for the team's last game against the Pisgah High School Bears, that number started to shrink.
"We had a couple kids come out in the first half, so I think when we started the second half, we were down to 13, and then at the end of the ball game I thi...

- Description
- The race for mayor in Asheville is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched contests in the mountains.
It's a rematch between incumbent Mayor Esther Manheimer and Councilwoman Kim Roney, who came within striking distance of beating Manheimer in 2022. Election records confirm Manheimer received 21,032 votes, while Roney received 17,918.
Now with just two months until Election Day, voters are sharing what important issues they think the contenders should openly talk about and say specifically where they stand.
For Asheville entrepreneur Frank Ballantine, who's lived in the city for decades, there are two big issues: Homelessness and public safety.
Ballantine says he wants a broader and open conversation by Manheimer and Roney about how the city responds to people experiencing homelessness.
"Talk about all aspects of the issue, whether it's programs that make the city more attractive to unhoused populations that are ...
