- The bodycam video from the arrest of former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and current CBS Sports announcer Tony Romo has been released after he was taken into custody in Milwaukee on suspicion of operating while intoxicated (OWI) following a traffic stop.
In the footage released by the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, Romo told the officer he was coming from a golf course and had consumed "zero" drinks when asked how much alcohol he had consumed.
When the officer asked Romo to step out of the vehicle to perform field sobriety tests, Romo said he wanted to call his lawyer first. The officer told him he was not allowed to do so and informed him he was being detained as part of an OWI investigation before taking him to a nearby location to conduct the tests.
The officer then administered a series of field sobriety tests, including checking Romo's eyes, asking him to walk heel-to-toe in a straight line and balance on one foot. The officer later asked R...

- Description
- Nearly two weeks after two men were killed in a downtown Asheville shooting, a mentor who knew both victims is asking the community to remember them for the lives they lived, not just the tragedy that took their lives.
Asheville police have not announced any arrests in connection with the July 19 shooting on Biltmore Avenue. Investigators say the case remains active as they work to identify and prosecute those responsible.
Leslie Council says she met Lamarius and Marques in 2016 through the Asheville nonprofit My Sistah Taught Me That. Over the years, she said she became a mentor to the two young men, describing them as vibrant, fun-loving people who eventually became like family.
Council says learning they had been killed was devastating and brought back painful memories. In 2018, she lost two girls connected to the same nonprofit to gun violence.
"Now it's 2026, and we're still here. I don't have the answers," she said. "Like, why w...

- Federal prosecutors in Washington, D.C., are seeking to seize more than $25 million in cryptocurrency tied to international romance and investment scams. The crackdown is part of a broader effort in which U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro has already frozen more than $800 million for victims, she told The National News Desk in a one-on-one interview.
Pirro, the U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, said her office filed a civil forfeiture complaint last week targeting the cryptocurrency, describing it as the latest recovery under “Strike Force” efforts launched through a scam center she created in November 2025.
Pirro said her office has made it a priority to pursue “those who are involved in transnational criminal organizations,” which she said are “for the most part, Chinese and Southeast Asian countries who are targeting Americans through cryptocurrency fraud.” She said scammers use familiar platforms and tactics to lure victims, including “social media, wh...

- The hearse carrying the late U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham arrived at 5:40 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29, in his hometown of Central, S.C., where family gathered for a private funeral service and burial at Mount Zion Cemetery.
Residents and supporters lined the downtown corridor beneath a large American flag suspended between two fire truck ladders as the procession made its way through the small Pickens County town of about 5,000 people.
Graham, born July 9, 1955, served 23 years in the U.S. Senate representing South Carolina. Family members, including his sister Darline, who will serve out his term and run for his seat in the next election, attended the private graveside service.
Funeral director Al Cumbie, who runs a 4th-generation funeral home in Central, coordinated the service.
Cumbie, 75, knew Graham, who was four years younger than himself. He shared his thoughts on Graham as a politician and Republican.

The department has linked a July 19 shooting on Biltmore Avenue, which killed two people and injured seven others, to a July 5 shooting on Maple Crest Road.
Police have described the downtown attack as direct retaliation and the latest chapter in a pattern of violence that has been taking place across Asheville "for some time."
But when asked whether the two groups are gangs, the Asheville Police Department has not provided a direct answer.
On July 22, I sent APD a detailed request for an on-camera interview to be conducted July 27 or July 28.
I explained that my investigation would bring together the Biltmore Avenue shooting, the earlier violence police believed preceded it, APD’s retaliation finding and Asheville’s broader history of retaliatory and drive-by shootings.

- There was a funnel cloud sighting in the Foster Creek community in Marshall amid severe storms that prompted tornado warnings across western North Carolina Tuesday evening.
"We had to bunker down at a friend's house because it was raining and thundering and the wind was so bad, I could barely drive," said Anubis Able, a Marshall resident.
"All of a sudden, it got really dark and then everything was still, and then the sky opened up into a torrential downpour," said Zoe Harrison, another Marshall resident.
Both residents took cover during the storm.
"So far, great news: no fatalities and no structural damage," said Madison County Manager Rod Honeycutt.
Honeycutt says a large sinkhole developed in front of Madison Funeral Home, caused by the storm. He said the most significant storm impacts are road closures due to downed trees and flooding.

Graham, a four-term Republican lawmaker, died on July 11, 2026, at age 71 following an aortic dissection, ending a public service career that spanned more than three decades.
Graham was one of the Palmetto State's most polarizing political figures, representing South Carolina in the U.S. Senate from 2003 until his death and previously serving four terms in the U.S. House after first winning election in 1994.
Born and raised in Pickens County, in Central South Carolina, Graham's early life was marked by personal hardship after the deaths of both parents while he was a young adult. Judd said county leaders relied on that data to determine where the county's first standalone EMS station would have the greatest impact.

Romer also said prison abolition remains a long-term objective, as is defunding the Pentagon, abolishing ICE, abolishing national borders and establishing government ownership of large corporations. They also sim for universal healthcare and a 32-hour work week.

The roof replacement was made possible through a partnership between Roman's Roofing, the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project, Transylvania Habitat for Humanity and the Owens Corning Foundation.

Now, the Asheville Regional Coalition for Home Repair (ARCHR) is launching a five-week fundraising campaign to raise $500,000. Combined with a $500,000 leadership gift from Deerfield, organizers hope to invest another $1 million into repairing storm-damaged homes across Madison and Buncombe counties.
"A lot of our neighbors are still not in homes that are safe and stable after the storm," said Andy Barnett, CEO of Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity.
The coalition says more than 200 homeowners have already received free repairs since the storm. However, organizers say hundreds more are still waiting for help.
"We've done a lot of roof replacements. We've done a lot of situations where decks or stairs and skirting on manufactured homes were washed away or were kind of undermined," Barnett said.

- Description
- The Asheville Police Department confirmed that a Glock switch was used in the fatal Biltmore Avenue shooting on Sunday, July 19.
A Glock Switch is a small device that illegally modifies a handgun and converts it into a machine gun.
"You start modifying it, it disturbs everything," said Phil Flack, a gunsmith with Blueridge Firearms Unlimited. "With this conversion like this, fires about 1,200 rounds a minute."
Flack says this modification also makes the gun difficult to control.
"With this thing going," Flack said, mimicking the sound of a machine gun, "up over town, there's probably 10 rounds of bullets scattered all over town that they haven't found.
News 13 reached out to Corey Ray with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Ray said the penalty for possessing a machine gun is imprisonment, up to 10 years, or substantial fines with $250,000 as a possibility, adding that a Glock switch is classified as...

- One week after a deadly shooting in downtown Asheville, police say the investigation remains active, but no arrests have been made.
The Asheville Police Department said it has identified multiple persons of interest and investigators are continuing to work to bring those involved into custody.
The shooting happened early Sunday, July 19, outside Dalton's Distillery on Biltmore Avenue. Two people were killed and seven others were injured when gunfire erupted in a nearby parking lot.
Despite the ongoing investigation, some people who live and work in the area say they are not changing their routines.
"Truthfully, I don't think it worries me too much, but it really is surprising. I didn't think there was that kind of activity going on in the South Slope of Asheville," said resident Tony Richards.
Nearby businesses also told News 13 the shooting has not led to a noticeable drop in customers.
Last week, APD Interim Polic...

- Community members honored the two victims of the July 19 fatal shooting with a pep rally, where a balloon release took place, along with a discussion of grief resources.
The community is missing Lamarius Jones and Marques Davis, who were both killed in the early morning shooting off Biltmore Avenue, as News 13 previously reported from a local mentorship program.
"He was the person that when you walked into a room, you couldn't miss his smile," said Marquetta Davis, a cousin of Davis.
Amid the sense of loss, the event kicked off the Asheville Youth Football League's 2026 season, with Jones' legacy in the league evident throughout.
"He was a motivative coach and he would just be there for you if you had ups and downs," said Damari Mapp, Jones' cousin and player on his team.
The league is now missing Jones, known as Coach Mari to the 12-and-under team.
"He's a cousin of mine, so when I heard this news, I was dee...

- Campers at Keystone Camp in Brevard got an unforgettable surprise Tuesday when Disney's "All Roads Lead to Camp" tour rolled into town to celebrate the upcoming release of "Camp Rock 3."
"I had no idea this was happening," camper Nevaeh Bianco said. "We were all really confused this morning, and then we ran outside and got so excited."
Keystone Camp was one of just eight summer camps across the country selected to host the traveling experience, which brings the spirit of the new movie directly to campers through music, dancing and hands-on activities.
The day included Camp Rock-themed karaoke, dance lessons featuring the iconic Camp Rock stomp, and interactive experiences designed to encourage campers to explore their talents and build confidence.
“I've always wanted to be a singer,” said camp participant Saige Leibovich, “but Camp Rock makes me think of being other things.”
For the 160 girls attending Keystone Ca...

- Description
- A new trade policy took effect Friday, imposing a fresh round of tariffs on global trading partners tied to allegations that they have failed to stop forced labor used to make products imported into the United States.
The new tariffs apply to 60 countries and range from 10% to 12.5%. Products from those countries make up 99% of U.S. imports.
“We have put our foot down, and we have told the countries, you need to take action. You need to prohibit the import of goods made with forced labor, and you need to enforce these laws so that we all have a level playing field,” Jamieson Greer, the United States trade representative, said Thursday.
Tariffs are a tax on imported goods and are typically passed down to the customer. The new fees take effect as temporary 10% tariffs on trading partners expired following a Supreme Court decision that overturned President Donald Trump’s “Liberation Day” policy implemented last year.
The new tariffs were imposed under a d...

- As Biltmore Village continues to recover from Helene, the City of Asheville is asking residents to help shape what the historic district will look like going forward.
The city hosted a public input session Tuesday focused on the next phase of the Biltmore Village Infrastructure Recovery Project, giving community members a chance to weigh in on proposed landscaping and sidewalk improvements.
While much of the village appears to be recovering, some business owners say the area still has a long way to go.
"But our numbers are still not quite meeting what they were prior to the hurricane," said Jordan Bruce of New Morning Gallery.
Some businesses remain closed nearly two years after the storm, and Bruce said she hopes to see more attention given to the village.
"It would be really nice if the city kind of took a little bit more care down here, instead of focusing on some of the bigger things that are happening," Bruce said.

- The goats behind Carl Sandburg's Home

- Description
- Pulitzer Prize-winning author and poet Carl Sandburg is often associated with his midwestern roots; his works pay tribute to the working-class families of Chicago, and a biography of Abraham Lincoln is among his most famous pieces.
But a move from the Midwest to the mountains of western North Carolina provides another enduring legacy, and we have his wife Lilian and a champion herd of dairy goats to thank for that.
"Carl and Lilian and the whole family, for the most part, they were living up in Michigan, and Mrs. Sandburg had gotten into dairy goats," explained Tom Avery, visitor services manager at the Carl Sandburg Home, a National Historic Site in Flat Rock.
The sandy soil near the banks of Lake Michigan did not make for the best pastureland for the goats, so Lilian proposed a move, literally to greener pastures.
"Carl basically said, 'Hey, as long as I'm next to you and I have a quiet place to write, I don't care where we live,'" ...

- What began as the promise of custom log cabins in the North Carolina mountains ended in heartbreak for dozens of families.
Federal prosecutors say Jason Speier convinced customers to pay millions of dollars for log cabin kits he never delivered, leaving victims with empty promises, financial losses and years of emotional turmoil.
Now, after years of fighting for justice, the man prosecutors described as a "master manipulator" is headed to federal prison.
Videos once shared by Speier captured the excitement he sold to customers.
"Look at that, we've got more cabins on the back there," laughed Speier.
In another video, Speier can be heard saying: "Look at that, honking, that's our buddy, that's our buddy, that's your cabin, ha, ha, ha."
For many families, those promises never became reality.
Victims finally face Speier in Asheville federal court.

- Explosive-laden drones targeted the northern Iraqi city of Irbil, where U.S. forces are stationed, while air raid sirens sounded in Bahrain early Friday, marking the latest escalation in the U.S.-Iran conflict. U.S.-led forces intercepted several of the drones, and no casualties or damage were immediately reported.
The incident came hours after U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said it completed its 13th straight night of strikes against Iran, targeting military command centers, drone storage facilities, communications networks, coastal surveillance sites and maritime capabilities aimed at reducing threats to commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

- Description
- Nearly a week after a deadly shooting in downtown Asheville, city leaders are shifting the conversation beyond the investigation and toward community safety, prevention efforts and support for those impacted.
At a community briefing Friday, officials discussed the ongoing investigation, resources for families and the work they say is needed to prevent future violence.
Police say they are still working to identify the people responsible for Sunday night's shooting, but community leaders say addressing violence requires more than arrests.
Michael Hall, chaplain with Be More Alive Ministries, said one question remains: what resources are available for young people when they are not in school?
"But where do our young people go when school is closed? What do they have to do?" he said.
Hall said community violence can be connected to deeper issues.
"When you have a number of young people and sometimes old that have...
