- When Hurricane Michael hit the Florida Panhandle five years ago, it left boats, cars and trucks piled up to the windows of Bonny Paulson's home in the tiny coastal community of Mexico Beach, Florida, even though the house rests on pillars 14 feet above the ground.
But Paulson's home, with a rounded shape that looks something like a ship, shrugged off Category 5 winds that might otherwise have collapsed it.

Her staff at the Keys Marine Laboratory on Long Key have faced swirls of heartbreak and hope since mid-July — when a mass coral evacuation began.
Heartbreak came in those first few weeks when scores of elkhorn and staghorn corals arrived at the lab, bleached or dead, as an unprecedented marine heat wave swept through offshore coral nurseries. Temperatures pushing the mid-90s arrived sooner than anticipated and caught the restoration community off-guard.
And then came the hope, however fleeting, that the first-of-its-kind evacuation and rescue operation was helping keep many corals alive. Corals regained their color and strength and in recent days have passed veterinarian health inspections.

- Tampa International Airport is aiming to make electric air taxis a possibility.
On Thursday, the airport hosted Florida’s first test flight of an electric vertical takeoff and landing plane, more commonly known as eVTOLs or electric air taxis.
It was also the first demonstration in the U.S. at a major airport, which officials said was symbolic of the region’s history as the birthplace of commercial flight.
“This is going to be a reality for us very soon,” said Tampa International Airport’s chief executive Joe Lopano.
Flying taxis are intended for shorter- or medium-range travel as destinations within a city or between a metropolitan center and its suburbs, whether for passengers or cargo. The hopes of this technology is to reduce traffic congestion and lower emissions.

- A crew of about 15 workers were perched on top of the colorful, football field-sized tent on Wednesday, cleaning it for the opening of the Garden Bros Nuclear Circus Humans Gone Wild, to be held in the parking lot at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg this weekend.
“They do this at least once a month,” Michelle Wiertalla, the box office manager said of the work crew. “It was really dusty in the last town, got to have it looking fresh.”
Garden Bros boasts the “largest big top arena” and the “largest circus on Earth.” The near two-hour production features special effects and concert style sound and lighting with over 60 performers like the human cannonball, aerial artists and the wheel of death. A kids fun zone has a circus pony, a giant slide, a bounce house and face painting.
There will be two shows on Thursday and Friday and three shows on Saturday and Sunday.

- A man was rescued after a small plane crashed into the Florida Everglades in far southwestern Broward County Tuesday morning.
The Federal Aviation Administration tells WPLG Television that the crash in the Everglades west of Hollywood, Florida, happened around 2 a.m. after the plane reportedly took off from the Okeechobee area.
Rescue crews sent to the scene found the man sitting on the wing of the plane.
He was later hoisted to a rescue helicopter.

- Police in Florida say they've arrested a suspect in the mass shooting on a Tampa street overnight.
Two people were killed and 18 injured after a fight erupted between two groups. Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw says a 22-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the shooting early Sunday.
He's charged with second-degree murder. Officers responded to the shooting just before 3 a.m. in Tampa's Ybor City area.
Bercaw says it's an area with several bars where a large number of late night revelers had gathered.
Investigators say they believe there were at least two shooters, but Bercaw had no information about whether further arrests were expected.

- With warmer oceans serving as fuel, Atlantic hurricanes are now more than twice as likely as before to rapidly intensify from wimpy minor hurricanes to powerful and catastrophic, a study said Thursday.
Last month Hurricane Lee went from barely a hurricane at 80 mph (129 kph) to the most powerful Category 5 hurricane with 155 mph (249 kph) winds in 24 hours. In 2017, before it devastated Puerto Rico, Hurricane Maria went from a Category 1 storm with 90 mph (145 kph) to a top-of-the-chart whopper with 160 mph (257 kph) winds in just 15 hours.
The study looked at 830 Atlantic tropical cyclones since 1971. It found that in the last 20 years, 8.1% of the time storms powered from a Category 1 minor storm to a major hurricane in just 24 hours. - The city of Lakeland, Florida held their 43rd annual swan roundup at Lake Morton on Tuesday. City employees took to the lake in boats to capture the population of 50 swans so they could be given wellness exams through My Pet's Animal Hospital, which has donated their services.
The lake's current swan population started in 1957, when a mated pair of swans was donated to the city by Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain.
Today, the city budgets about $10,000 each year to care for and feed the swans, which have become emblematic of Lakeland. Images and statues of swans can be seen throughout the town.

An Islamorada community group that is spending $6 million to restore and preserve the Alligator Reef Lighthouse turned on its new solar-powered lights on Saturday to remind the public about the effort.
“Alligator Lighthouse was lit in 1873 and it stayed lit until about 2013, and then it went dark for 10 years,” said Rob Dixon, the executive director of Save Alligator Lighthouse, which took over the lighthouse's title in late 2021. “And now our Statue of Liberty is lit once again.”

- A Florida reptile park has taken in an alligator that lost its nose and upper jaw to a fight or boat propeller.
Gatorland Orlando said over the weekend that the injured alligator came from a lake in nearby Sanford, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) northeast of Orlando.
“She had basically no chance of surviving in the wild with such a severe injury,” the park said in a social media post.
Over the next few days, the park's veterinarian staff will be monitoring the gator in an effort to make sure it is eating in a stress-free environment, the park said.

The ocean drone recorded wave heights of up to 23 feet and wind gusts of nearly 100 mph. The drone launched from St. Petersburg in mid-June in anticipation of a gulf storm later in the hurricane season.

- The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey circus has been reimagined and reborn without animals as a high-octane family event with highwire tricks, soaring trapeze artists and bicycles leaping on trampolines.
Feld Entertainment, which owns the “Greatest Show on Earth,” revealed to The Associated Press what audiences can expect during the show’s upcoming 2023 North American tour kicking off this fall.
The 75 performers from 18 countries will include performers on a triangular high wire 25 feet off the ground, crisscrossing flying trapeze artists, a spinning double wheel powered by acrobats and BMX trail bikes, unicycle riders and skateboarders doing flips and tricks.
The tour kicks off in Bossier City, Louisiana, from Sept 29-Oct. 1 and then goes to Ohio, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Maryland, Michigan, Indiana and ends the year in Oklahoma. It restarts in 2024 in Florida, home to Feld Entertainment.

- It’s lunchtime at the Salt Lake City Mosquito Abatement District and a colony of sabethes cyaneus — also known as the paddle-legged beauty for its feathery appendages and iridescent coloring — find their way to Ella Branham.
“They’re not very aggressive, um, and they’re kind of picky eaters,” said Branham, a technician, as she exhaled into a glass tank to attract the insects to the carbon dioxide in her breath. “So I’ll be feeding them with my arm.”
Branham had volunteered to let the South American mosquitoes feed on her blood so they can produce eggs and maintain the colony for education and research at the lab in the Salt Lake City district. - When the University of South Florida kicked off its first football season in 1997, the program's offices were headquartered in a glorified trailer on campus known as the “Ponderosa.” Back then, the Bulls played their games miles away in Tampa Stadium, affectionately called the “Sombrero” for its curved shape.
That stadium is long gone and since 1998 USF has played at cavernous Raymond James Stadium, home of the NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers and host of three Super Bowls. They've drawn some big crowds for major opponents but often struggle to fill even half the 75,000 seats. The school also has no control over such revenue streams as parking and concessions.

Idalia is forecast to make landfall Wednesday morning as an “extremely dangerous” Category 4 hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center. The storm’s path has shifted west slightly, with landfall now expected in Taylor County. The storm was expected to bring “catastrophic storm surge and destructive winds to the area, the hurricane center said.
Much of the Tampa Bay area remains under a hurricane warning and storm surge warning. As the storm brushed past the region, its winds shifted and began pushing water into coastal areas. Flooding was happening in Pinellas coastal communities such as Madeira Beach, Treasure Island and Gulfport.

- Shiv Shukla is concerned about many threats facing snakes. During the almost 3-mile-trek in search of one and in his lab at USF-St. Pete, he speaks at length about invasive species, habitat destruction and urbanization.
But his master’s thesis focuses on an understudied and emerging peril — Ophidiomyces ophiodiicola, a pathogen which causes a fatal fungal disease in the reptiles.
“When people think of invasive species, they think of the pythons, the iguanas — things like that,” Shukla said. “But the pathogens, too, can cause detrimental impacts, which is what we’re trying to study.”
