- Florida’s Supreme Court justices on Wednesday heard arguments over a proposed amendment that would restore broader abortion access, grilling attorneys on both sides of the issue.
The amendment would protect abortion until viability, which is estimated to be at about 24 weeks. It would undo the state’s current ban on abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy and negate a six-week ban that lawmakers approved to take effect pending the outcome of an ongoing court case.
But whether the proposal appears on the 2024 ballot hinges on the conservative seven-member Florida Supreme Court.
Attorney General Ashley Moody and anti-abortion groups challenged the amendment, saying its language is misleading and that it would usher in sweeping consequences that would not be clear to the voter.
But the group behind it, Floridians Protecting Freedom, argued that voters are “perfectly capable of reading the language and understanding it.”

- Tampa Bay has become one of the hottest housing markets in the country in recent years. At the same time, the region has experienced an influx of corporate real estate investors purchasing single-family homes.
We analyzed property data from Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties and identified dozens of companies that control 50 homes or more. In total, these large investors have bought around 27,000 houses in the region and turned them into rentals.
The data shows the buying spiked in 2021.
Experts say when a small number of companies control a disproportionate number of homes, it can lead to higher prices and rents.

- An adorable, furry baby Hoffman's two-toed sloth has made its debut at a zoo in Florida.
Zookeepers at the Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society have been monitoring the baby sloth and its mother, Wilbur, since witnessing the birth early in the morning of Jan. 23.
Wilbur, who was the last sloth born at the Palm Beach Zoo 21 years ago, and her mate Dustin are part of a professional scientific breeding program called the Species Survival Plan.
It manages the population of sloths in human care since their genetics may contribute to wild populations in the future, zoo officials said.
Fad says Wilbur and Dustin were matched in a way she compared to dating apps for humans.
Turns out, they were a perfect match.
The goal is to "coordinate and work together so that we can help the conservation of these guys and have the best genetics and diversity possible in managed care," said zoo spokeswoman Kelly Fad.

- Three people were killed Thursday when a small plane crashed into a Clearwater mobile home park Thursday evening, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.
The crash happened shortly after 7 p.m. when the plane went down in the Bayside Waters mobile home park. Formerly known as Japanese Gardens Mobile Home Park, the park is located at 19709 U.S. Highway 19 North, south of the Clearwater Mall.
According to preliminary information released by the FAA, the pilot of the Beechcraft Bonanza V35 and two people on the ground were killed. Only the pilot was aboard the plane.
The pilot reported engine failure before the crash, the FAA said.

- Since 2016, St. Petersburg officials have gathered outside City Hall at the start of February to raise a flag in honor of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, the founder of Black History Month.
That tradition could end after this year.
A bill moving through the Florida Legislature would ban the display of flags on government property that represent what it describes as a political view, including “a politically partisan, racial, sexual orientation and gender, or political ideology viewpoint.”
Local officials gathered today to raise such a flag, with some condemning the possibility it might be the last time.

The state Board of Governors approved the regulation in a voice vote on Wednesday.
The law is part of a broader Republican push nationwide to target diversity, equity and inclusion programs in higher education. It also prohibits tax money from being used to fund “political or social activism,” although student fees can pay for that.
The board opted to replace sociology as a core requirement in favor of a U.S. history class, another education priority of conservatives.

- A witness saw sparks shooting from a cargo plane as it made an emergency landing at Miami International Airport shortly after takeoff.
The aircraft landed safely Thursday night “after experiencing an engine malfunction soon after departure,” a spokesperson for Atlas Air said in a statement Friday. “The crew followed all standard procedures and safely returned to MIA.”

- Higher energy and housing prices boosted overall U.S. inflation in December, a sign that the Federal Reserve’s drive to slow inflation to its 2% target will likely remain a bumpy one.
Thursday’s report from the Labor Department showed that overall prices rose 0.3% from November and 3.4% from 12 months earlier. Those gains exceeded the previous 0.1% monthly rise and the 3.1% annual inflation in November. The December figures came in slightly above economists’ forecasts.
Housing costs accounted for more than half the increase in prices from November to December. Energy costs, led by electricity and gasoline, along with food prices, also contributed to the increase.
Excluding volatile food and energy costs, though, so-called core prices rose just 0.3% month over month, unchanged from November’s increase. Core prices were up 3.9% from a year earlier — the mildest such pace since May 2021 and down from November’s 4% year-over year gain.

- We’re at the 118th Epiphany celebration in Tarpon Springs. It is the largest commemoration in the Western Hemisphere of Jesus Christ’s baptism in the Jordan River, and last year drew 20,000 spectators.
The Orthros service began at 8 a.m. at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral followed by the Divine Liturgy. Around noon, clergy, parishioners in traditional garb and spectators will begin the procession to Spring Bayou for the blessing of Tarpon Springs, the highlight of this tradition for many.
That’s when 65 boys from the cathedral will climb into dinghies waiting in the bayou. Another boy is participating but not diving. The Archbishop will bless the waters before tossing a white cross into the water. The boys will dive in and try to retrieve the cross, and whoever finds it is said to receive a year of blessings.

The helicopter, a Hughes 369 aircraft, was carrying two people from Fort Myers when it crashed into a canal about three miles west of Miami Executive Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

The eruption appears to have occurred about 1.8 miles from the town of Grindavík, the Icelandic Meteorological Office said.
As the eruption spread, magma, or semi-molten rock, could be seen spewing along the ridge of a hill.
In November, police evacuated the fishing town of Grindavik after strong seismic activity in the area raised fears of an imminent eruption.

- Fifty-two endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtles are rehabbing at four facilities in Florida following a flight on a private plane from the New England Aquarium in Massachusetts.
The turtles arrived in Tampa on Tuesday, and 16 were sent to Clearwater Marine Aquarium, officials said in a news release.
All of the turtles were experiencing a condition known as “cold-stun” from the frigid New England waters.
The other turtles were taken to Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, The Florida Aquarium in Tampa and Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Jupiter.
Sea turtles are cold-blooded reptiles and adapt to the temperature of their surroundings.
During prolonged exposure to icy water temperatures, their circulatory systems slow down and the turtles are unable to swim or function properly.
The turtles will continue rehabbing at the aquarium, where guests are welcome to visit and watch their journey.
