- Description
- The first Women's March of the Biden administration headed straight for the steps of the Supreme Court on Saturday, part of nationwide protests that drew thousands to Washington and other cities to demand continued access to abortion in a year when conservative lawmakers and judges have put it in jeopardy.
Many thousands of women filled a square near the White House for a rally before the march. They waved signs that said “Mind your own uterus," “I love someone who had an abortion" and “Abortion is a personal choice, not a legal debate,” among other messages.
Some wore T-shirts reading simply “1973," a reference to the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, which made abortion legal for generations of American women.
Organizers say the Washington march will be among hundreds of abortion-themed protests around the country Saturday.

Still, Democrats say they are doing all they can to codify the Supreme Court's 1973 Roe v. Wade decision after the Supreme Court recently allowed the Texas law banning most abortions in the state to take effect.

- Description
- Opening a major new phase in the U.S vaccination drive against COVID-19, CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky signed off on a series of recommendations from a panel of advisers.
However, Walensky decided to make one recommendation that the panel had rejected.
The advisers said boosters should be offered to people 65 and older, nursing home residents and those ages 50 to 64 who have risky underlying health problems. The extra dose would be given once they are at least six months past their last Pfizer shot.
The panel on Thursday voted against saying that people can get a booster if they are ages 18 to 64 years and are health-care workers or have another job that puts them at increased risk of being exposed to the virus. But Walensky disagreed and put that recommendation back in, noting that such a move aligns with an FDA booster authorization decision earlier this week.

- President Joe Biden says the U.S. is doubling its purchase of Pfizer's COVID-19 shots to share with the world.
At a virtual "vaccine summit" on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, Biden embraced a goal of vaccinating 70% of the global population within the next year and encouraged well-off nations to do more to get the coronavirus under control around the world.
World leaders, aid groups and global health organizations are growing increasingly vocal about the slow pace of global vaccinations and the inequity of access to shots between residents of wealthier and poorer nations.
The U.S. purchase of another 500 million shots brings the total U.S. vaccination commitment to more than 1.1 billion doses through 2022. About 160 million shots supplied by the U.S. have already been distributed to more than 100 countries, representing more donations than the rest of the world combined.

- Louisiana's oyster farmers, crabbers, shrimpers and anglers are nothing if not adaptable, producing hundreds of tons of seafood annually. They've fought off a devastating oil spill, floods, changing markets and endless hurricanes just to stay in business.
Ida, though, has some wondering what might come next.
The Category 4 hurricane fractured some parts of the industry even worse than Katrina, which cost seafood businesses more than $1 billion in 2005. No one yet knows how many boats, docks and processors were lost because of Ida's relentless, 150-mph winds. Vessels that made it to the safest harbors fared the best, yet even some of them were destroyed by the storm's fury.
The story of Ida's impact on Louisiana's $2.4 billion seafood industry, which employs more than 23,000, is spread across places that outsiders struggle to even pronounce: Parishes like Plaquemines, Lafourche, and Terrebonne, cities and hamlets including Pointe-aux-Chenes, Des Al...

Flights will continue to depart from San Antonio but authorities may add El Paso, the official said.

- Description
- In his most forceful pandemic actions and words, President Joe Biden on Thursday announced sweeping new federal vaccine requirements affecting as many as 100 million Americans in an all-out effort to increase COVID-19 vaccinations and curb the surging delta variant.
Speaking at the White House, Biden sharply criticized the roughly 80 million Americans who are not yet vaccinated, despite months of availability and incentives.
"Many of us are frustrated with the nearly 80 million Americans who are still not vaccinated, even though the vaccine is safe, effective and free. " Biden said.
“We are in the tough stretch and it could last for a while,” Biden said of the current state of the pandemic.
After months of using promotions to drive the vaccination rate, Biden is taking a much firmer hand, as he aides blamed people who have not yet received shots for the sharp rise in cases that is killing more than 1,000 people per day and imperil...

- Amirah Ahmed, 17, was born after the 9/11 attacks and feels like she was thrust into a struggle not of her making.
She spent her early years growing up in New Orleans and later moved to Fredericksburg, Virginia, where for the first time, she says she started to develop a sense of what it meant to be Muslim American and "have those two identities coexist."
Ahmed recalls how a few years ago at her Virginia school's 9/11 commemoration, she became upset while watching a video her teacher had played of the attacks.
"During that moment. I wasn't thinking about being Muslim. I wasn't thinking how other people were watching me or perceiving me," she said.
"It was only after the fact speaking to some friends that are also in the class where I started to understand other people had the mindset, 'Why is she crying? She's the Muslim. Like, does she have the right to cry or to be upset over this event when she's the other? When she's the enemy in ...

- Description
- Mansoor Shams has traveled across the U.S. with a sign that reads: "I'm Muslim and a U.S. Marine, ask anything." It's part of the 39-year-old's efforts to teach others about his faith and counter hate through dialogue.
The married father of two, who served in the Marines from 2000 to 2004, was called names like "Taliban," "terrorist" and "Osama bin Laden" by some of his fellow Marines after 9/11.
At first, Shams laughed it off, but eventually the bias became too much to bear.
"At some point it started getting to me because it became also reflective in people's attitudes. It became more than just a joke. It became some people's real perception that I was something different or something other," he said. "And I felt that from certain people's behavior and attitudes toward me. So it was--that was very tough."
Twenty years after the 9/11 attacks, Shams continues to feel he will be perceived differently because of his faith.

- A crowd erupted in cheers and song Wednesday as work crews hoisted an enormous statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee off the giant pedestal where it has towered over Virginia's capital city for more than a century.
The piece, one of America's largest monuments to the Confederacy, was lifted away just before 9 a.m. as one of the construction workers who helped strap harnesses to Lee and his horse lifted his arms in the air and counted down, "Three, two, one!" to jubilant shouts from a crowd of hundreds.
"This is a long time coming, part of the healing process for Virginia to move forward, to embrace diversity, to be a welcoming state, to be inclusive, and they let people know that our lights are on and our doors are open," said Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam.
Black Lives Matter signs were seen in the crowd. Some chanted "Whose streets? Our streets!" and sang, "Hey hey hey, goodbye."

- High court leaves Texas abortion law in place
- Runtime

- Date posted
- Description
- A deeply divided Supreme Court is allowing a Texas law that bans most abortions to remain in force, for now stripping most women of the right to an abortion in the nation's second-largest state.
The court voted 5-4 to deny an emergency appeal from abortion providers and others that sought to block enforcement of the law, which went into effect Wednesday. But the justices also suggested that their order likely isn't the last word on whether the law can stand because other challenges to it can still be brought.
The Texas law, signed by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in May, prohibits abortions once medical professionals can detect cardiac activity, usually around six weeks and before many women know they're pregnant.
