- Investigators Sunday worked to determine how eight people died in a crush of fans at a Houston music festival, as friends and loved ones mourned the victims and a makeshift memorial of flowers and candles took shape at the site.
Rudy Pena, of Laredo, Texas, was a student at Laredo College and wanted to be Border Patrol agent, his friend Stacey Sarmiento said. She described him as a people person.
Houston officials did not immediately release the victims' names or the cause of death.
Thirteen people remained hospitalized Sunday. Their conditions were not disclosed.
City officials said they were in the early stages of investigating what caused the pandemonium at the sold-out Astroworld festival.
About 50,000 people were there. Authorities said that among other things, they will look at how the area around the stage was designed.

The blaze erupted in a building in a one-story strip mall on Vermont Avenue shortly after 6:30 p.m., the Fire Department said.
Firefighters were forced off the roof when it became unsafe. But crews outside poured streams of water on it from the ground and from high ladders.
Footage in news reports showed flames shooting through the roof of a portion of the mall that at one time housed a karaoke bar, although it wasn't clear whether the bar was still in business.
In addition to the roof, the building's facade collapsed and the interior of the building was gutted.
Firefighters knocked down the blaze in about 90 minutes. No injuries were reported, and crews managed to prevent the fire from reaching nearby buildings.

- About 84 million Americans who work at companies with 100 or more employees will need to be vaccinated against COVID-19 by Jan. 4, 2022, or get tested for the virus weekly, under government rules issued Thursday.
The new requirements are the Biden administration's boldest move yet to persuade reluctant Americans to finally get a vaccine that has been widely available for months -- or face financial consequences.
If successful, administration officials believe it will go a long way toward ending a pandemic that has killed more than 750,000 Americans.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations will force the companies to require that unvaccinated workers test negative for COVID-19 at least once a week and wear a mask while in the workplace.

The expression took off after a reporter at a NASCAR race in early October mischaracterized an "F--- Joe Biden" chant in the crowd as a chant in support for driver Brandon Brown.
Now, Republicans of all stripes — even in Congress — are saying 'Let's Go Brandon' when they want to insult the president without hurling obscenities.
Republican Rep. Bill Posey of Florida ended an Oct. 21 House floor speech that criticized Biden's spending plans with a fist pump and an emphatic 'Let's Go Brandon!'

Two years on, the school board is considering a district plan to use state money to replace 50 diesel buses with electric models over the next several years.
The transition is part of a small but growing movement led by parents, students and lawmakers to purchase electric school buses to improve the health of students and cut planet-warming carbon dioxide emissions.

Biden, introduced by Vice President Kamala Harris, sought to reassure his supporters that he wouldn't let up the fight as he works to muscle his massive social spending bill through a divided Congress. Invoking King, Biden said the country was still working to live up to its ideals as a nation and had reached an inflection point on issues including fighting voting restrictions.
"I know that progress does not come fast enough," Biden said. "It never has."
But he reiterated that protecting the right to vote was "central" to his administration. "I know the stakes. You know the stakes. This is far from over," he said.

- Scientists temporarily attached a pig's kidney to a human body and watched it begin to work, a small step in the decades-long quest to one day use animal organs for life-saving transplants.
More than 90,000 people in the U.S. are in line for a kidney transplant. Every day, 12 die while waiting. Pig-to-human transplants could address the organ shortage.
One hurdle: A sugar in pig cells, foreign to the human body, causes immediate organ rejection. The kidney for this experiment came from a gene-edited animal, engineered to eliminate that sugar and avoid human immune system attack.
Surgeons attached the pig kidney to a pair of large blood vessels in the human groin, but kept it outside the body so they could observe it for two days.
The organ did what a kidney is supposed to do. It filtered waste, produced urine and didn't trigger rejection — a scientific success.

- Flash flooding drenches Alabama, kills at least 4

- Description
- Terrified drivers climbed out of swamped cars and muddy floodwater flowed through neighborhoods after a stalled weather front drenched Alabama for hours, leaving entire communities under water Thursday and killing at least four people with still more drenching storms to come.
Dozens of people had to be rescued Wednesday night in central Alabama, where the National Weather Service said as much as 13 inches (33 centimeters) of rain fell, and a south Alabama town temporarily lost its main grocery store when a creek came through the doors of the Piggly Wiggly. Near the coast, heavy rains caused sewage to bubble out of underground pipes.
The forecast called for more deluges in areas including metro Birmingham, which was under a flash flood watch, and meteorologists predicted another wet day for most of the state, along with parts of Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. As much as 5 more inches (13 centimeters) of rain was possible through Thursday evening, the weather s...

- A powerful earthquake collapsed at least one coal mine and dozens of mud houses in southwest Pakistan early Thursday, killing at least 20 people and injuring more than 200, an official said.
The death toll was expected to rise even further as crews searched in the remote mountainous area, said Suhail Anwar Shaheen, the local deputy commissioner.
At least four of the dead were killed when the coal mine in which they were working collapsed, said Shaheen, citing coal miners in the area. As many as 100 homes also collapsed, burying sleeping residents inside.
The epicenter of the 5.9 magnitude quake was about 15 kilometers (9 miles) north-northeast of Harnai in Baluchistan province, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It struck about 9 kilometers (5.5 miles) below the earth's surface; shallower quakes tend to cause more damage.

- Pfizer files for emergency use of vaccine for kids

- Description
- Pfizer asked the U.S. government to allow use of its COVID-19 vaccine in children ages 5 to 11 -- and if regulators agree, shots could begin within a matter of weeks.
Many parents and pediatricians are clamoring for protection for children younger than 12, today's age cutoff for the vaccine made by Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech. Not only can youngsters sometimes get seriously ill but keeping them in school can be a challenge with the coronavirus still raging in poorly vaccinated communities.
"It makes me very happy that I am helping other kids get the vaccine," says eight-year-old Sebastian Prybol, who is enrolled in the Pfizer clinical trial for 5 to 11-year-olds. "And like, honestly, if I had to get the shot again, I would. Honestly, I would."

- Description
- The Washington National Cathedral marked the grim milestone of 700,000 American deaths due to COVID-19 by tolling its Bourdon bell 700 times, once for every 1000 deaths.
As the bell tolled, the cathedral also presented a video showing hundreds of thousands of small white flags on the National Mall that were recently featured in the exhibition, "In America: Remember."
The exhibit was created by artist Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg, and it was spread out across 20 acres of the National Mall in late September and early October.
Many of the flags featured handwritten notes of remembrance to Americans who have died during the pandemic.

- Description
- Doctors across the country are growing weary fighting vaccine misinformation as they work to clamp down on a delta-driven surge that is straining hospitals and sending death rates climbing.
Since the outbreak began in the spring of 2020, things haven't been easy for health care workers on the front lines.
"A year ago, we're health care heroes and everybody's clapping for us, and now we're being, in some areas, harassed and and disbelieved and ridiculed for what we're trying to do, which is just depressing and frustrating," said Dr. Stu Coffman, an emergency room physician in Dallas, Texas.

- Massive cleanup begins after California oil spill
- Runtime

- Description
- Since a pipeline spilled crude off the California coast this weekend, just a handful of oiled birds have been recovered in what environmental advocates said could be a hopeful sign for the region's wildlife.
But they say it's too soon to know how many seabirds, marine mammals and other animals will be ultimately affected by the oily film covering marsh areas and floating on the ocean, or for how long.
Oiled seabirds are often among the earliest victims of a spill because gobs of crude can clump their feathers together, leaving them chilled by ocean water.
