- The race against time to find a submersible that disappeared on its way to the Titanic wreckage site entered a new phase of desperation on Thursday morning as the final hours of oxygen left on board the tiny vessel ticked off the clock.
Rescuers have rushed more ships and vessels to the site of the disappearance, hoping underwater sounds they detected for a second straight day might help narrow their search in the urgent, international mission.
But the crew had only a four-day oxygen supply when the vessel, called the Titan, put to sea around 6am on Sunday, and it was set to expire on Thursday morning.
Even those who expressed optimism warned that many obstacles remain: from pinpointing the vessel’s location, to reaching it with rescue equipment, to bringing it to the surface — assuming it’s still intact and all that has to happen before the passengers’ oxygen supply runs out.

The pair were underwater for about 30 seconds as they traveled nearly 100 feet through a drain pipe near Pensacola last Friday. Escambia County Sheriff Chip Simmons says it was all captured on Deputy William Hollingsworth’s body camera. The sheriff says Hollingsworth had stopped to help motorists stranded by rapidly rising water. That’s when he spotted the man go under. He rushed to his aid but was also swept into the drain. They emerged, safe but shaken, on the other side of the highway.

- The 2023 hurricane season is upon us. In Southwest Florida, however, scores of people are still struggling to overcome the devastation wrought by Hurricane Ian.
Ian made landfall in Cayo Costa as a monster Category 4 storm in September. The hurricane scarred the Southwest Florida coastline and flattened homes and businesses along the shores of Fort Myers Beach in Lee County. Ian is the costliest storm in Florida’s history, with more than $109 billion in damage, and it killed at least 156 people — a staggering number of fatalities for a hurricane in the United States.
There are lessons to be gleaned from the rubble left behind, from the water marks that are as high as 15 feet branding Fort Myers buildings to the roads washed away as far as 50 miles inland in Arcadia because of river flooding. Several of his clients agreed, saying they feel better both mentally and physically.

Parkinson's disease, an inner ear disorder and other neurological problems, all likely caused by the Vietnam vet's exposure to the infamous defoliant Agent Orange, made it difficult for him to move.

The spectacular wreck happened May 24 in Lowndes County, the Georgia State Patrol said.

- Jaiden Hudson’s jaw dropped when he turned a corner and got his first look at Big John, a skeleton of the largest triceratops ever uncovered.
It’s the star of a new Tampa exhibit opening at the Glazer Children’s Museum on Memorial Day weekend.
The 6-year-old kindergartener from Booker T. Washington Elementary School has a bedroom stocked with dinosaur books and pictures and isn’t as tall as Big John’s left thigh bone.
He was among a group of 45 kids from his school who recently got a preview of what will likely be a blockbuster exhibit at the museum.

- A St. Petersburg fourth grader’s artwork — a drawing of her in her hijab mastering the tennis and karate that helped her overcome bullying — is the Florida state winner for the 15th annual Doodle for Google art contest for kids.
Her artwork now moves on to a national competition and voting is open until Thursday, May 25, at doodles.google.com/d4g/vote. Click on the Grades 4-5 category to see the Florida winner by Iman Haddouche-Miranda, age 9 (actually age 9½, as she firmly reminds).
The precocious girl in the teal hijab said simply, “I want to be me.”

- SpaceX launched the first Saudi female astronaut on Sunday along with a Royal Saudi Air Force fighter pilot.
They’re joined by an American from Tennessee and a retired NASA astronaut who now works for the Houston company that arranged the trip.
Their capsule should reach the International Space Station Monday morning.
Spectators at Space View Park in Titusville, directly across from the launch pad, cheered as the rocket blasted off from Florida's Kennedy Space Center.
The crew will spend just over a week at the space station before splashing down off the Florida coast.
It’s the second private flight to the space station organized by Houston-based Axiom Space.

- Two endangered Galapagos tortoises, rare books and comic books went missing from locations across Florida.
On May 16, a couple was arrested after police determined they sold some of the items on eBay and kept other valuables — including the rare reptiles — at a St. Petersburg home.
Joshua McCarty-Thomas, 46, was taken into custody and his spouse, Dashae McCarty-Thomas, 29, was arrested as a co-defendant in the case, according to criminal report affidavits.

- Every Friday for the past 14 years, people at the Unitarian Universalist Church of St. Petersburg have offered warm meals to people experiencing homelessness.
In 2022, church member John Curtis, a retired psychiatrist and artist, started sitting with people for a conversation and a portrait sketch. He has produced 17 pieces so far, all mounted at the lobby of the church for an exhibit tiled “Facing Homelessness.”

- On Wednesday, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed an immigration legislative package that underscores the political tensions between the White House and the Republican governor as he prepares to run for president.
With the new piece of legislation, DeSantis said Florida will be cracking down on labor from migrants in the country illegally.
This ends community-funded programs that give identification cards to immigrants living in the U.S. illegally, and toughening penalties against those who transport migrants into the state.
Florida is also ramping up a relaunch of a controversial program that would allow DeSantis to bus and fly migrants anywhere in the country, less than a year after the governor sent 49 migrants to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts.

- A steady stream of migrants is crossing the Rio Grande river, near Mexico's border city of Matamoros, across from Brownsville, Texas.
Despite a dissuasion campaign by the U.S. government, migrants continue to head toward its southern border.
On the Mexican side of the river, a group of migrants were waiting for their opportunity to cross as immigration officers tried to disperse them.
While new U.S. policies to clamp down on illegal crossings will soon take effect, the government is offering migrants a legal path into the country.
Danilo Ruiz and his family are among migrants who have travelled from El Salvador. They were waiting for an appointment to request asylum while staying at a shelter.
Ruiz said he followed to laws to avoid being sent back to his country.
Under the new policies, migrants will have to apply online through a government app for asylum, have a sponsor and pass background checks.

“The stress that this has put on the community is unbelievable. The fear,” said Micah Desiante, a transgender high school English teacher who has been teaching in Florida’s Palm Beach County since 2015.

The march, which organizers believe to be the largest demonstration by drag performers in Florida history, comes a week after state lawmakers voted to advance bills that would criminalize transgender people’s use of the bathroom that aligns with their identity and ban doctors from providing gender-affirming care.
Lawmakers also passed bills that allow health care providers to refuse people care based on religious beliefs and ban the use of personal pronouns not aligned with gender at birth in Florida schools.
One bill appears to specifically target drag performers, barring children from attending “adult live performances” featuring certain commonly used prosthetics. The bill’s language has sparked questions about the future of Pride.
