- An Eccentric House That Is Both Modern and Primitive – and Baffled the Neighbors
- Runtime
- 4:05
- Date posted
- Description
- When the Ruth Van Sickle Ford House was being constructed outside Chicago, its owners put up a sign that read, "We don't like your house either." The home is both modern and primitive, being based on the ancient idea of a circle surrounding a fireplace. Its architect, Bruce Goff, incorporated such unusual materials as coal, rope, and a dome from a WWII bomber. Ruth Van SIckle Ford had an art school, and wanted the house to serve as an advertisement, so she got it put into Life magazine. Visiting crowds required a traffic cop on Sunday afternoons. #architecture #architecturelovers #homedesign #homearchitecture

- The Overlooked Architecture of Chicago's South Side
- Runtime
- 4:52
- Date posted
- Description
- Chicago is a city celebrated for architecture, but that often only encompasses buildings downtown or on the North Side. That's despite marvelous buildings on the South Side like the Art Moderne Chicago Vocational High School. Two high schools designed at the same time as twins by the same architect (Dwight Perkins) in different parts of the city illustrate the point, as architecture critic Lee Bey shows: Schurz on the North Side is landmarked, while Bowen is ignored. Even some works by world-famous architects like Jeanne Gang or Frank Lloyd Wright are lesser-known when located on the South Side. #architecture #architecturelovers #chicago #franklloydwright #jeannegang #dwightperkins
