- In 1972, a young Binghamton entrepreneur had an idea – bring professional hockey to New York State’s Southern Tier. At that time few people in the area knew anything about hockey. However, Jim Matthews loved hockey and had played it since he was a young boy growing up in Parry Sound, Ontario. He believed that hockey and the blue-collar roots of the “Valley of Opportunity” were a perfect fit.

- Educators and their supporters gathered at Ithaca High School after class on Tuesday for a “practice picket” demonstration.
The Ithaca Teachers Association is currently negotiating a new contract with the Ithaca City School District. Their old contract is set to expire at the end of June. The union represents around 600 educators.
Kathryn Cernera is the president of the union. She said a practice picket is like a fire drill.
“We do them in schools all the time. We hope to never have to use them, but we want to be prepared in case we do.”
Cernera said the union is still negotiating on salaries, healthcare for domestic partners, family leave and artificial intelligence regulations. They have one scheduled bargaining session left on Thursday.

- Ithaca Festival kicked off with a parade Thursday.
Local musicians, dancers, activist groups and even puppets packed the streets.
Ithaca resident Heather Byrne described the parade as a family reunion, with everyone in the city gathered in the same place at the same time.
Byrne said the parade shows off all the city’s wonderful wackiness.
"It is classically weird. It's so awesomely weird."
The parade signals the start of the city’s three day arts festival. Vendors, performers, and celebrating Ithacans will take over the Commons for the weekend.
This year’s theme is Enchanted Ithaca.

- Agnes tells the incredible story of a natural disaster that forever changed a region.
On June 19th, 1972, the first hurricane of the season, Agnes, crossed over the Florida Panhandle and headed back out to sea. By June 22nd, the remnants of Agnes stalled over the northeastern United States, dumping up to 22 inches of rain in some areas, including the Elmira/Corning region of New York. The devastating flooding resulted in one of the worst natural disasters in the region's history.

Prior to the performance, David fondly recalls his time with Binghamton's Tri-Cities Opera. Heiss is currently the principal cellist for the NY Pops Orchestra.

- The Harriet Tubman Center for Freedom and Equity at Binghamton University unveiled a new statue of Tubman along the Downtown Binghamton Freedom Trail earlier today. Anne Bailey, director of the center, said for her, the statue is personal.“I feel an incredible debt, and I mean a debt, to people like Harriet Tubman and the other group of multicultural heroes on this trail who, to me, are real heroes,” Bailey said. “What they did, their sacrifices, their fearlessness, the actions that they took, that's what's made my life possible. I would not have the life that I have, my family would not have the life that we have, without their actions.
