- Optimizing Sleep in Women
Fiona Baker, PhD
Sleep is essential for a healthy life. In women, a range of sleep problems can emerge within the context of reproductive aging. In the reproductive years, women who experience severe PMS or painful cramps are likely to have transient insomnia and daytime sleepiness. Alleviating pain can lead to a better night’s sleep. During pregnancy and post-partum, some sleep disruption is to be expected, however, when severe or if a sleep disorder like sleep apnea emerges, it needs to be managed to ensure maintenance of physical and mental health. Midlife and menopause can also bring fluctuations in sleep patterns, but research shows promising solutions. Clinical trials of cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia show consistent improvements in sleep and hot flash-related interference and it is now a first-line of treatment for insomnia.

New York's Adirondack Park is larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Glacier, Grand Canyon, and Great Smokies National Parks combined. It is one of the largest unbroken deciduous forests on earth, with a thousand miles of streams and rivers, hundreds of lakes, and lofty peaks.
Amazingly, most of the land within the park is privately owned, and 85 million people live within a day's drive. Yet the Adirondacks remain largely undeveloped. How did that happen?
Join us in exploring the creation of the Adirondack Park Agency 50 years ago and the impact it has had on the development of the park over the years. We will explore the rich diversity of the park through carbon credits and carbon sequestration. What is it and why is it crucial to defining the park today?

We’ll learn about the 1913 Binghamton factory fire, which killed 31 people, and New York City’s Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire that claimed the lives of more than 100 people just a few years before. We’ll see how these tragedies deepened our understanding of fire science, created new safety regulations, and changed the way we fight fires.

Just like dinosaurs, countless ocean creatures went extinct under somewhat perplexing conditions when a giant meteorite struck Earth about 66 million years ago. Yet excellent fossil records of their shells remain, helping us understand what happened ecologically, why some organisms survived, and why others didn't. Drs.
