- The Harriet Tubman Center for Freedom and Equity at Binghamton University unveiled a new statue of Tubman along the Downtown Binghamton Freedom Trail earlier today. Anne Bailey, director of the center, said for her, the statue is personal.“I feel an incredible debt, and I mean a debt, to people like Harriet Tubman and the other group of multicultural heroes on this trail who, to me, are real heroes,” Bailey said. “What they did, their sacrifices, their fearlessness, the actions that they took, that's what's made my life possible. I would not have the life that I have, my family would not have the life that we have, without their actions.

- An original documentary from WSKG Public Television and filmmaker Brian Frey, North to Freedom examines the important role Upstate New York played in the Underground Railroad during the years leading up to and during the American Civil War. The Central and Southern Tier of the state, including the Finger Lakes region, served as crucial passages and ultimate destinations for those seeking freedom, offering hope and refuge to enslaved Americans. Binghamton, Elmira, Owego, Ithaca, Syracuse, Peterboro, and dozens of other communities provided safe houses, churches, and sanctuaries along the route from the South.

- Members of Binghamton University’s Graduate Student Employees Union marched across campus Wednesday, joining protests on SUNY campuses across the state. The union’s contract with the university system has been under negotiation for more than a year. Among other things, the union is demanding a minimum pay floor of $40,059 for graduate students working at upstate schools.
SUNY declined to comment on the protests, citing ongoing negotiations.

- Anti-war protests continue at Cornell University, as tensions rise over the suspension of an international graduate student.
Around 150 people gathered at Day Hall Wednesday to call for the university to divest from weapons manufacturers fueling the war in Gaza, and to overturn the student’s suspension.
A group of around 10 counter-demonstrators also came to Day Hall. One counter-protester rushed into the crowd saying the protesters were supporting criminals. Police removed him from the crowd.
The protest continued after the incident.

- The former clerk-treasurer of the village of Addison in Steuben County, who stole more than $1.1 million in public funds, will be required to pay full restitution as part of a multi-year sentence. Ursula Stone, 56, must also forfeit her state pension.
In May, Stone pleaded guilty and admitted to stealing $1,171,362 in public funds during a 19-year span. She will be sentenced to 3-9 years in state prison. She was convicted of one felony count of corrupting the government.
Along with prison time, Stone must repay the entire amount she stole and forfeit her state-issued pension of $1,920 per month.
Stone retired from her village position in March 2023 during the state’s investigation.
State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli said this is the first case in the history of the state that a public official will give up their pension as part of a criminal sentence.
