- After losing his son to an overdose, Jim Faust founded the Massachusetts nonprofit Adam’s Parachute, which shares fly fishing with people in recovery. And it’s actually the name of a fly-fishing fly. And Faust sees it as an apt metaphor for his son’s final moments. Adam had one parachute, and he gave it to someone else.
“The Irish call it a thin place,” Faust told GBH News. “You know, the place where the veil between the heavenly and the earthly or between the human and the spiritual is thin and, you know, maybe it’s even transparent sometimes, but you can feel it. These are my thin places.”
Many people in recovery haven’t found their thin place yet, Faust said. And he’s trying to help them to do just that.

- In the inaugural edition of “Soft Serve with Scientists,” MIT physicist Pablo Jarillo-Herrero ventures to explain his groundbreaking work in twistronics to Edgar B. Herwick III in the time it takes to finish a cone of soft serve. Jarillo-Herrero helped establish the field of twistronics, where ultra-thin materials are stacked and rotated at precise angles to change their physical properties.
Using graphene sheets just one atom thick, Jarillo-Herrero and his team discovered that by twisting the layers to a “magic angle,” they can make the graphene behave as a superconductor, an insulator, or even a magnet. This science could eventually lead to highly sensitive detectors for infrared, terahertz and microwave light, as well as hyper-efficient computing devices. But manufacturing at scale remains a major challenge.
