The protests have only deepened divisions among students with different viewpoints – including Jewish students, found among both pro-Palestine and pro-Israel demonstrators. To dig deeper, Crystal Haynes was joined by Emily Spatz, Campus Editor with Northeastern University's Huntington News, and Babson College History Professor Marjorie Feld, author of the forthcoming book, "The Threshold of Dissent: A History of American Jewish Critics of Zionism."

- Same school, different tuition: here's how colleges figure out how much you'll pay
- Date posted
- Description
- Universities dole out more than half of the revenue they collect from tuition in the form of discounts and financial aid in their efforts to attract students. The US average is 56 percent. If private a company discounted its products by more than half, it would probably go out of business. So why do colleges use this self-destructive business model that leaves many prospective students thinking college costs more than it does?

- Boston Police body-cam footage of protest near Emerson College, April 2024
- Date posted

- Description
- Boston police officers arrested 108 protesters during an overnight sweep of a pro-Palestinian encampment on the Emerson College campus in Downtown Boston. Both students and police say they were injured during the aggressive clash.
In police camera footage provided to GBH News by the Boston Police Department, an officer is shown reciting the city’s ordinance against encampments through his vehicle’s PA system, warning the crowd that “unlawful camping” is in violation of city laws.
In response to a request from GBH News for all body camera footage within a four-hour span of the sweep, the Boston Police Department did not provide videos of the clearing or arrests.

- Why activists are suing Boston over White Stadium repairs
- Date posted
- Description
- For more than seventy years, White Stadium in Franklin Park has been an athletics destination for the Boston Public Schools. But over the years it's slowly deteriorated, and is now in desperate need of repair. That state of affairs prompted the city to team up with the group behind the Boston Unity, a new professional women's soccer team, to share and completely renovate the stadium.
Mayor Michelle Wu says Boston Public School students will still have plenty of access to the stadium, but a group of local activists say the city is effectively trying to privatize a treasured public space — and they've gone to court to try to stop the deal. Adam Reilly is joined by two of the plaintiffs: Louis Elisa, co-founder and former president of the Franklin Park Coalition, and Renee Stacey Welch, a longtime resident of Roxbury and Jamaica Plain.

- Did the border toll backlash set back MassDOT's efforts to find new ways to fund the T?
- Date posted
- Description
- When Massachusetts transportation secretary Monica Tibbits-Nutt addressed the advocacy group Walk Massachusetts earlier this month, she spoke candidly about both how she approaches her job and the steps she'd like to see the state take to raise money for transportation-related costs. In retrospect though, Tibbits-Nutt may have been too unguarded. Her comments — including a suggestion that the state impose tolls on vehicles entering from elsewhere and a dig at big pickup trucks — blew up among conservatives, who depicted Tibbits-Nutt as a tax-happy progressive elitist. And they earned multiple rebukes from Governor Maura Healey, who made a point of saying that Tibbits-Nutt chose her words poorly.

- Why isn’t basketball star Caitlin Clark paid more?
- Date posted
- Description
- She helped break basketball ratings records and bring in millions more viewers for the women's NCAA final than the men's. But those numbers aren't reflected in her rookie contract with the WNBA's Indiana Fever, whihch will pay her only around $76,000 for her first season. Compare that to San Antoni Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama, who took home a more than $12 million salary, and the gender pay gap in professional basketball looks more like a cavern. NBC Sports Boston host and reporter Trenni Casey joined Crystal Haynes to discuss that and her predictions for the upcoming NFL draft, which could be the most important one for the New England Patriots in decades.

- ShotSpotter aims to detect gunshots instantly. The ACLU says it's ineffective.
- Date posted
- Description
- Police in Boston have used ShotSpotter technology since 2007 to notify them when and where gunshots ring out. SoundThinking, the company behind ShotSpotter, has acoustic sensors that are placed around the city — which the company argues help police detect and respond quickly to shootings even if no one makes a 911 call.
With Boston's ShotSpotter contract up for renewal in June, a new report from the ACLU of Massachusetts makes the case that it's an unreliable technology and calls for the city to move on. The ACLU's analysis of more than 1,300 Boston police reports found nearly 70% of ShotSpotter alerts yielded no evidence of shots fired.
Kade Crockford, director of the Technology for Liberty Project at the ACLU of Massachusetts, and Tom Chittum, SoundThinking's senior vice president of Analytics and Forensic Services, join Katie Lannan to discuss ShotSpotter's role and impacts in Boston.

- Date posted
- Description
- MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng stepped onto the job just over a year ago, taking the helm of a transit system that was plagued by widespread slowdowns and under federal scrutiny over a string of safety incidents. Eng, the former head of the Long Island Rail Road, has been optimistic about the T's future, and advocates and government officials alike have cheered both the progress he's made and the transparency he's brought to the role.
To break down what's been different so far under Eng's tenure and what else the T still needs, Katie Lannan is joined on Talking Politics by TransitMatters executive director Jarred Johnson and GBH News transportation reporter Bob Seay, who both recently sat down with Eng for a discussion on rebuilding trust with the T.
