The chairman of the Jordan Valley EMS Authority in East Jordan said board members were concerned about his handling of money and his lack of communication with the board.
“I did have an email out to Joel the previous week that I needed to sit down and talk with him because he was making some motions that weren't really board-approved,” said Mark L. Penzien, chairman of Jordan Valley EMS Authority. “And I wasn't sure exactly what I was going to say to him, but it's been that he hasn't been listening to the board."
Charlevoix County Sheriff Chuck Vondra said there is an investigation due to the accusation of financial misconduct.

“Every winter, bears in Michigan and throughout their North American range go into a period of hibernation or winter sleep,” said Mark Boersen, wildlife biologist for the DNR. “We only have black bears in Michigan, but they all will hibernate throughout the winter.”

In Michigan, there are around 167,000 fewer SNAP recipients compared to last year and some are pointing the finger at the One Big Beautiful Bill, signed in July 2025.
Among the bill's changes, states must pay more than the existing 50% of administrative costs.
"The federal covered the other half," Julie Cassidy, a senior policy analyst at the Michigan League for Public Policy, said. "The federal government reduced its share to 25%, so that meant that the state had to come up with another $94 million, roughly."
