- Description
- A new heat map is available for the public to see where there are possible cases of EHD, a disease found in deer.
“This heat map is something we created in response to a lot of the concerns we were hearing from hunters that were wanting to know where Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease or EHD was occurring in the state and what it might mean for them this upcoming fall during the hunting season,” said Samantha Courtney, deer biologist for the Michigan Department Natural Resources.
“EHD is a disease that's transmitted by biting midges, which is a type of flying insect, on it is a virus,” said Steve Griffith, DNR Wildlife biologist. “And what it does is deer will start to bleed internally.”
“It's ultimately been created to provide that transparency and really help hunters understand where EHD reports are coming from and where the Wildlife Health Lab testing is still needed or where it's already been confirmed,” said Courtney.

- Utah authorities formally linked another unsolved murder dating back more than 50 years ago to one of the most prolific serial killers in American history: Ted Bundy.
The Summit County sheriff and county attorney made the announcement during a news conference on Tuesday, as well as disclosed the findings that led investigators to identify Bundy as the murderer, and explained their decision to close the cold case.
Officials also identified the victim as Melissa Ann Smith, a 17-year-old girl whose body was found in a wooded area near Toll Canyon in Summit Park in October 1974. Her death had been listed as an unsolved case -- and was believed by state authorities to be connected to Bundy.
"This DNA evidence, when considered alongside evidence related to pattern, motive, means, and opportunity, establishes that Ted Bundy was responsible for Melissa Ann Smith's murder," Summit County Attorney Margaret Olson said during the news briefing.

- A northern Michigan teenager may have found themselves the victim of an extortion plot, with TikTok, a few photos and AI playing a critical role in the scheme.
An investigation is underway Tuesday in Grand Traverse County, but there is also a word of warning and a resource that kids and parents should be aware of.
"A lot of these offenders are not from our area,” said Lt. Jonathan Morgan of the Grand Traverse Sheriff’s Office. “They're from out of the country and it makes investigating these types of incidents almost impossible."
Almost impossible… but regardless, here at the Grand Traverse County Sheriff's Office, an investigation is underway, even if the odds are stacked against them.
"We often can't have justice served just because we can never identify who they actually are," Morgan said.
They can't be identified because the cybercriminals have lots of dark places on the web to hide and tricks to use to separa...

- A new dog rescue in Kalkaska County is giving stray dogs a second chance at finding permanent homes, with space for up to 20 dogs and a mission supported entirely by volunteers and donations.
Two women with a dream and passion for dogs started their own dog rescue in Kalkaska County.
My Journey Home Dog Rescue is meant to be a temporary home for stray dogs.
"Just a second chance that they so deserve,” Heidi Rowe said.
The shelter celebrated its grand opening over the weekend. The maximum capacity is 20 dogs. There are 10 kennels inside the pole barn and 10 tiny houses set up outside.
"So, each dog will have their own private little, tiny home. You can see the doggie doors inside the man doors. So, they will be able to come inside, outside as they please,” Rowe said. “And this just offers them a little bit of privacy. The main barn tends to get a little noisy. So, this is just a little more quiet and lets them adjust...

Hugs, prayers, well-wishes, phone calls, texts...they've wiped away my tears, prayed with me, laughed with me, shared memories with me, answered any call for help that we've had, offered space for salvaged items, brought me into their homes for dinner.
