- Speaking in Kyiv 13 May, Germany's top diplomat pledged further support for a "national dialogue" in Ukraine, where two provinces in the country's east voted for self-rule in illegal referendums over the weekend. The results of votes, widely regarded as a Kremlin-backed sham, have not recognised by the United States or the European Union. Russia, however, has said it would respect the results. Steinmeier said during his visit that officials Kyiv and the separatist opposition must begin taking steps toward holding a "national dialogue." He was met by acting Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk.
