- Ukraine's defense ministry has said that a Ukrainian military helicopter has been hit by rocket fire and exploded while on the ground at an airfield in Kramatorsk near the rebel-held eastern city of Slaviansk. The army spokesman said the explosion was the result of fire from a rocket-propelled grenade launcher. There were no casualties. Video footage on a social media website showed thick black smoke rising over the airfield. Local residents said they had heard shooting and three explosions. The incident followed a hand grenade attack near Ukraine's Black Sea port of Odessa. At least 7 were injured. Odesa residents have built several such checkpoints near the town aimed at stopping pro-Russian separatists entering from Moldova's breakaway territory of Transdniestria.

According to preliminary news reports, several explosions rocked the area at around 11 am local time. Videos posted online showed flames near the area of the blast. There are conflicting explanations for the cause of the crash. Kramatorsk.info news reports that one theory is that the aircraft caught fire during a warm-up before takeoff. The pilot of the helicopter reportedly escaped the blast without injury. Pro-Russian insurgents have been active in the area and shot at Ukrainian military helicopters near the airfield earlier in the week.
