- There were over 10,000 antisemitic incidents across the U.S. within the year following Hamas’s October 7th terrorist attack in Israel. It was the highest number of antisemitic incidents ever recorded in a one-year period since the Anti-Defamation League began tracking back in 1979.
Antisemitism has always been part of the public discussion in America – and across all political lines – says, Oren Segal, senior vice president of Counter-Extremism and Intelligence the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). However, in his decades of experience tracking and combatting antisemitism online and offline at ADL, he has never seen anything like this type of growth in extremism and antisemitism.
Why is this the case?
One of the main contributors to the recent uptick of antisemitic incidents follows an age-old trend: unrest in the Middle East. When there is war in the Middle East, we see backlash in our country, and people target Jews for the actions of the...

- Antisemitism within academia is not new. In the 19th and 20th centuries, quotas restricting Jewish enrollment were in place at prestigious universities in the U.S. and around the globe. Nazi Germany banished Jewish professors and students in the 1930s.
After the October 7th attacks on Israel, the Center for Jewish History in New York City decided to explore that history in the exhibition “Between Antisemitism and Activism.” It explored Jewish scholars and activists who were persecuted in Nazi Germany with the goal of providing important context to the complexities that surround Jewish activism and culture on campuses today.
Gavriel Rosenfeld, President of the Center for Jewish History, speaks with Your Voice Matters host, Hari Sreenivasan, about historic themes, including free speech on campus and Jews being drawn into larger world events. Rosenfeld says “Most people in America haven't yet decided where the line is between free speech and hate speech. A...
