- Can you stop a mining company from bulldozing a village? Helena Marschall, age 20 and one of Germany’s most prominent youth climate activists, is going to try. She is co-creator of the global, youth-led climate awareness movement, Fridays for Future Germany. Helena explains the climate crisis, shares how she became a climate activist and why she is confident that young people can change things. Her film also shows what an open-pit mine looks like: Garzweiler in Germany is one of Europe's largest coal mines.

- What Happens at a Safe Injection Site, or Overdose Prevention Center?
- Date posted
- Description
- OnPoint NYC is the first and currently only officially sanctioned overdose prevention center (OPC) in the United States. Its two locations, in East Harlem and Washington Heights, are safe injection sites. Approximately 3,200 registered participants can bring their illegal drugs in for testing to find out what substances are in them, and at the same site, use clean needle supplies to inject themselves.
Reporter Christopher Booker takes us to the work areas of Yarelix Estrada, a staff drug tester, and Race Samuelson, who observes people after they take their drugs for signs of overdose and to administer aid if needed. According to Executive Director Sam Rivera, there have been zero deaths at the center since it opened in November 2021 with the approval of then New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.

- Opioid Use Harm Reduction is Official in New York
- Date posted
- Description
- The best harm reduction advice for drug users is “Never use alone,” according to the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS). New York has adopted harm reduction strategies like that simple advice to reduce opioid overdose deaths. The state is also distributing naloxone, testing drugs for fentanyl and supporting needle exchanges. Research shows that users of syringe programs are five times more likely to enter drug treatment programs. The state’s strategy is informed by how HIV cases among intravenous drug users were successfully reduced. The term harm reduction is decades old and was used for the first time by the federal government in 2022 in President Biden’s budget proposal. In 2023, reporter Christopher Booker shadowed harm reduction workers in Hudson, NY, and Far Rockaways in Queens, New York City, in this report for MetroFocus.

All of the restaurant’s internationally diverse chefs are women 55 and over—affectionately called "nonnas" -the Italian word for grandma (nonna). The owner of Enoteca Maria, Jodie Caraballo, describes this unusual restaurant where women from around the world share their culinary wisdom with locals and tourists who come for the diversity of dishes. He values his older employees’ years of experience, including that of Maral Tseylikman, who shares her cooking from Azerbaijan and is featured in this video. - Description
- The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Americorps originated in Staten Island in 1965, when a group of older adults volunteered at the underfunded and troubled Willowbrook State School. Today in New York State, more than 1,100 adults between the ages of 55 and 101 volunteer at more than 250 nonprofit organizations. They help provide a service while keeping active and connected to their community. From providing access to food to giving advice on household finances, older adults who volunteer are likely to decrease their chances of premature death, according to a Harvard School of Public Health study.
We highlight Staten Island resident Sharon Mineo, who volunteers with the Nourish the Service food pantry at Fort Wadsworth Military Base, and with a grandmothers club and a hospital; and Alina Molina, who manages the RSVP program as Vice President, Program services, for the Community Service Society in New York.

- Half a million free meals were delivered to homebound, senior citizen New Yorkers by a single nonprofit in 2023. For nearly 50 years, Encore Community Services has operated a meal delivery service out of St. Malachy’s church in Midtown Manhattan's theater district, serving 1,200 meals a day to seniors living alone on Manhattan's West side. Follow volunteer Royal Albis as he drives 50 blocks in rush hour traffic to make deliveries to an isolated senior in need of food and company. And hear Chitra Desai's story about how she went from ensuring others had enough to eat to needing assistance herself. Many New Yorkers only have social security income and inflation and decreased physical mobility greatly affects access to nutritious food - and company.

- Description
- The intersection of income and senior isolation is discussed in a panel with Dory Garcia (Executive Director, ARC Seniors), Hazel Gurland-Pooler (Producer/Director, Storming Caesars Palace), Jack Kupferman (President, Gray Panthers NYC), and Jessika Roldan, LMSW (Site Director, ARC XVI Central Harlem). The talk is presented by THIRTEEN, ARC Seniors, and Indie Lens Pop-Up, part of Independent Lens, the PBS series.
Storming Caesars Palace is the extraordinary story of Ruby Duncan, who went from a boisterous protestor to a strategic organizer to a White House advisor. As she led a grassroots movement that fought for basic income guarantee for families, challenging presidents, and the Las Vegas mob, everyday Americans had to rethink their notions of the “welfare queen”—a derogatory stereotype of women who allegedly misuse or collect excess public assistance through fraud or manipulation.
