- America’s favorite weatherman, Al Roker, joined us to discuss the Great Gulf Hurricane that hit the Texas city of Galveston on September 8, 1900. The storm killed an estimated 10,000 people and remains the greatest natural disaster in U.S. history – deadlier than hurricanes Katrina and Sandy combined.
Roker says that human hubris and political tensions with Cuba ultimately prevented Galveston from better preparing for the storm. Even though Cuban meteorologists forecasted a storm to emerge from the Gulf and hit Texas, U.S. Weather Bureau Chief William Moore dismissed the warnings.
Galveston and Superstorm Sandy have taught us that we need to harden our infrastructure against these kinds of storms.

The "Bridge to the Ancestors" ancestral run /walk in 2023 was organized by the Esto'k Gna, also identified as the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe of Texas. Beginning at the Permian Basin and ending at the Gulf of Mexico, the journey honored scared sites across their landscape - "Somi Se'k" - which translates to "The Land of the Sun."
According to the 2021 report "Indigenous Resistance Against Carbon" by the Indigenous Environmental Network and Oil Change International,
Indigenous-led efforts will have potentially stopped or delayed greenhouse gas pollution equal to at least 25% of annual U.S. & Canadian emissions.
