- On March 20, 2023, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments for Arizona v. Navajo Nation, wherein the Navajo Nation alleged that the United States government breached its legal responsibility to ensure access to water on the Navajo reservation. Of the 173,667 residents of the Navajo Nation, about 30% of the population does not have reliable access to clean drinking water. A decades-long drought in the Southwest, worsened by climate change, has made water even scarcer.
In this episode of “Tip of the Iceberg” host Ethan Brown breaks down the main issues raised by Arizona v. Navajo Nation, how the justices might rule, and the strange concession that the U.S. attorney repeatedly made throughout the hearing.

This massive step in reducing potential future carbon emissions was largely ignored, as it was accompanied by a scaled-down approval of Willow, a drilling project in Alaska’s North Slope.
Willow was unanimously supported by Alaskan government officials and by a majority of neighboring Indigenous communities. However, folks in the Lower 48 fiercely opposed the development, amassing over 3.7 million signatures on a Change.org petition urging the government to block the project.

- Among the roles currently held by Dr. Robert Waldinger are those of Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, Director of the Harvard Study of Adult Development, as well as being a practicing psychiatrist, psychoanalyst, and Zen priest.
Dr. Waldinger’s new book The Good Life, co-authored with his colleague Marc Schulz, focuses on the Harvard Study of Adult Development. The longest scientific study on happiness began in 1938 and continues today, with Dr. Waldinger serving as its fourth director. The main finding of the study is that good relationships keep us happier and healthier.
In this "Attribution” episode, host Bob McKinnon and Dr. Waldinger talk about how this study has evolved with the addition of new technologies and the central role of relationships in our lives, especially the importance of how and with whom we spend our time.

- In December of 2022, the National Ignition Facility announced a breakthrough in nuclear fusion technology: for the first time, a nuclear fusion reaction created a net gain of energy. The process produces no greenhouse gas emissions, so it does not contribute to climate change. But as exciting as this breakthrough is, there’s still a long way to go before nuclear fusion is widely implemented and used to power homes, for example.

- World leaders gathered in Montreal for the fifteenth UN Biodiversity Conference, or COP15, in December 2022. Representatives from around the globe were working toward a global treaty to help stave off mass extinctions, mitigate climate change, and conserve important natural resources. But the United States was notably absent from this effort. Though not invisible at COP15, the U.S. is the only country in the world that has not yet ratified the 1992 treaty that established the United Nations Convention on Biodiversity.

- The 2022 UN Climate Change Conference, or COP27, ended with a historic deal to create a new loss and damage fund. Through this arrangement, developed countries, responsible for high carbon emissions, will compensate developing countries suffering from climate-related disasters that cannot be mitigated or prepared for, such as floods or droughts.
The new fund is a win for developing countries, but it’s also a win for developed countries like the United States. If the fund is negotiated well, and everyone is held accountable for their contributions, it can help the American economy, health, and national security. - The 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference, also known as COP27, kicked off in November 2022 in Sharm el-Sheik, Egypt. Representatives from 198 countries met to negotiate the next batch of global climate agreements.
Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of the UN Climate Convention, opened the conference by saying, “Today a new era begins — and we begin to do things differently. Paris gave us the agreement. Katowice and Glasgow gave us the plan. Sharm el-Sheik shifts us to implementation.”
After years of climate pledges looking decades into the future, having leaders finally focus on implementation sounded exciting. In this episode of “Tip of the Iceberg,” host Ethan Brown analyzes the plans presented at COP27 and identifies which issues still require solutions to be found.

- There has been a string of stunts recently with climate activists targeting artwork, from Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers” and Monet’s “Grainstacks” being attacked with soup and mashed potatoes, and an individual gluing his head to Vermeer’s “Girl with a Pearl Earring.” These protests have reinvigorated conversations about the “3.5% rule,” which suggests a movement needs only 3.5% of the population involved to be successful. Or at least that’s what some climate activists have claimed.
Host Ethan Brown argues why the 3.5% rule might not be applicable to climate advocacy and why leading with the goal of inspiring as many people as possible could produce more success in this episode of “Tip of the Iceberg.”

- In October 2022, nineteen states launched an investigation into JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs’ involvement in the United Nations Net-Zero Banking Alliance (NZBA). Banks in this alliance committed to aligning their lending and investment portfolios with a net-zero emissions goal by 2050 or sooner.
The attorney generals of these states said it was against the United States’ best interests for these banks to step away from the fossil fuel industry, with the Attorney General of Texas calling the banks “corporate activists.”
But according to a joint report from Rainforest Action Network, Sierra Club, and others, these companies are far from being “corporate activists” and rank high in fossil fuel financing. Its anniversary present was the start of a Supreme Court case – Sackett v. EPA – that might influence the fate of the Clean Water Act. This case will determine if Chantell and Michael Sackett had to obtain a permit under the Clean Water Act before they built a home on a wetland in Idaho. Many observers predicted the Supreme Court would definitively rule against the EPA in this case, but after oral arguments, the outcome may turn out to be more nuanced.
