- For immigrants to the United States, the difficulty of crossing borders is compounded by a volatile political climate. The challenges are even greater for those seeking refuge in the United States because of LGBTQ+ persecution.
This episode focuses on Oluchi Omeoga, who is based in Minneapolis and works to safeguard those at the intersection of immigration status, race and gender identity as the co-director of the Black LGBTQIA+ Migrant Project (BLMP). The project was created in response to the increasing number of Black LGBTQ+ migrants who were in vulnerable situations after fleeing persecution in their home countries or were exposed to discrimination in the U.S. due to their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Between 1912 and 1914, educator and author Booker T. Washington partnered with German-Jewish immigrant and president of Sears, Roebuck & Company, Julius Rosenwald, to build six schools in rural Alabama. These schools became known as the Rosenwald Schools and reflected the shared belief of Washington and Rosenwald that education was key to combating generations of oppression.
From 1917 to 1938 nearly 5,000 Rosenwald Schools were constructed across 15 states, serving more than 700,000 Black children and operating well into the 1950s. The Julius Rosenwald Fund provided seed money and local Black communities covered 50% or more of the construction costs, allowing them to chart their own course for success.

- Southern Black Americans traveling to the North for higher education would face a new world of opportunity and experience. They came from farms, remote rural towns, and urban centers like Atlanta. For many, it was their first chance to travel outside the segregated South.
In Southern train depots, African American passengers waited in Black-only waiting rooms – crowded, unsanitary and poorly lit. They boarded segregated Jim Crow railroad cars with cramped seating, no luggage racks, insufficient heating and poor sanitation. - Following Black gains made during Reconstruction (1865-1877) in the aftermath of the Civil War, local and state governments across the South passed a range of laws designed to thwart Black progress and restrict African Americans from participation in political, economic and civic life. These discriminatory legal and social practices, known collectively as Jim Crow, would be officially legitimized by the U.S. Supreme Court in its 1896 ruling on Plessy v. Ferguson. The Court’s decision, which provided for segregated facilities for Blacks and whites, constitutionally reinforced long-standing injustices against Black Americans. Black schools in the rural South were overcrowded and underfinanced, lacking proper sanitation and heating as well as basic furnishings and school supplies. Teachers were poorly trained and underpaid. “Separate but equal” funding of Black education in the South would continue through much of the 20th century.

- Thelma Straight’s brother was just 16 when he was shot and killed, a tragedy that had a crippling effect on her family life. Hello! I'm Schantelle Alonzo, a first generation Filipina-American artist here at SVA, and the theme of this contest really spoke to me. Growing up in a diverse neighborhood and having a background in social justice/ethnographic theater, I made it my artistic mission to share and celebrate stories of underrepresented communities. I have familiarized myself with stories of those just trying to get by with the culture they love, and believe the way to combat hate is to celebrate and share even more of our stories louder with pride.
