Description: The Park Slope Armory in Brooklyn was built in 1895 for the National Guard's 14th Regiment. As historian Francis Morrone explains, it looks like a fortress, but it didn't serve a defensive military purpose. Young men from the neighborhood were recruited and trained here. A statue commemorates the "Doughboy soldier," a typical enlisted soldier from World War I. This broke from the tradition of erecting statues to memorialize specific, heroic leaders.

Today the Park Slope Armory holds a YMCA fitness and activity center, including an indoor track. Sports have a history here: in 1939, the armory hosted a 102-game indoor baseball season.

Description: Staten Island's Greenbelt is made of connected parcels of forested land across the New York City borough, managed by the Greenbelt Conservancy. A great variety of trails span ridges and wetlands. Our intention when we began filming was to find the Heyerdahl House, the ruins of an 1800s stone home in Bucks Hollow. Following directions found online, we proceeded to get lost in the woods. After about an hour of hiking through a forested swamp in late spring, we realized the trails were special enough a topic. Secluded in the woods with nothing but trees in vision or earshot, we were impressed to find a place like this in New York City.

We returned in the fall with Greenbelt advocates Kathleen Vorwick and Dorothy Reilly to find a forest of yellows, browns, and red and a swamp dried out from the summer months. As we learned more about the area's sites, history, and preservation efforts it became clear that much would have to be left out of this video. As the trail map on the G...

The stadium's history and a personal story is shared by Brian Lopinto of The Friends of Hinchliffe Stadium, which was key to the stadium's renovation and reopening in May 2023. The 10,000-capacity, horseshoe style stadium was also once used by three Paterson football teams. The stadium was later used by Paterson public schools and shut down in 1997 until its 2023 renovation.
